Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Laila narrates that I prayed with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was offering voluntary prayers at night. He recited a verse, and after that he said, "I seek Allah's refuge from Hell, and destruction is for the people of Hell."

Hazrat Masruq narrates that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) recited this verse { فَمَنَّ اللَّہُ عَلَیْنَا وَوَقَانَا عَذَابَ السَّمُومِ } and then said, "O Allah! Bestow Your favor upon us and protect us from the punishment of Hell. Surely, You are the Benefactor and the Most Merciful." Hazrat A'mash was asked whether she made this supplication during prayer, and he replied, "Yes, she made it during prayer."

Hazrat Abad bin Hamzah says that I went to Hazrat Asma, she was reciting this verse { فَمَنَّ اللَّہُ عَلَیْنَا وَوَقَانَا عَذَابَ السَّمُومِ }. She stopped at this verse and began seeking refuge with Allah and making supplications. Hazrat Abad says that I went to the market, fulfilled my need, and when I returned, she was still seeking refuge and making supplications.

Hazrat Abdullah says that when one passes by the mention of Hell in prayer, he should seek refuge from Hell, and when he passes by the mention of Paradise, he should ask Allah for Paradise.

Hasan did not see any harm in a person, when passing by a verse, asking a question according to it. Ibn Sirin considered this to be disliked.

Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I performed prayer with the Noble Prophet, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he recited a verse of glorification, he would glorify Allah Almighty; when he recited a verse of supplication, he would supplicate; and when he recited a verse seeking refuge, he would seek refuge with Allah.
