Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Hisham bin Urwah narrates that I sent a message to Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), daughter of Saad, and asked how much distance must be traveled to attend Jumu'ah (Friday prayer)? She replied that Hazrat Saad used to travel seven or eight miles to attend Jumu'ah. Sometimes he would go, and sometimes he would not.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Jumu'ah is obligatory upon every person who is able to attend it.

Ibrahim says that one will come for Jumu'ah from a distance of two farsakhs.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Yazid narrates that I asked Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib, "On whom is Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) obligatory?" He replied, "On the one who hears the call to Jumu'ah (the adhan)."

Hazrat Abu Bakhtari says that I saw Hazrat Anas coming for Jumu'ah from the place of Zawiyah; this place is at a distance of two farsakh from Basra.

Ibn Aun narrates that Abu Mulaeeh was the governor of Abla. When Friday came, he would lead the Friday prayer.

Hazrat Ikrimah says that one should come for Jumu'ah from a distance of four farsakh.

Hazrat Abu Abdur Rahman says that we used to come from a distance of two farsakh for the prayer.

Hasan says that every person who can return to his family at night will come for Jumu'ah.

Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz says that every person should come for Jumu'ah who can return to his family at night.

Hazrat Hisham bin Urwah states that my father used to live at "Bir-e-Urwah," which was three miles away from Madinah; he would not attend for Jumu'ah and congregational prayers.

Hazrat Aflah, the freed slave of Abu Ayyub, narrates that Hazrat Ibn Salam used to come to us from the outskirts of the city on Fridays. He would bring a vessel of water with him and would offer the Friday prayer.

Hazrat Mujahid states that a group of men and women used to perform Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and their mounts would not arrive until the next day.

Hazrat Nafi' says that Jumu'ah is obligatory upon the person who is able to return and spend the night with his family.

Hazrat Abu Ja'far says that Hazrat Abdullah bin Rawahah used to come to Jumu'ah on foot. Hazrat Hashim says that I asked Hazrat Abdul Hameed how much distance was there between his house and the place of Jumu'ah? He replied that it was two miles.

Hazrat Zuhri says that people used to come from the place of Dhul-Hulaifah and offer Friday prayer with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

Hazrat Hoshab bin Aqeel says: From what distance is it necessary to come and offer Jumu'ah? He replied: From seven miles.

Hazrat Ja'far bin Burqan says that I asked Hazrat Zuhri: At what distance from the city does Friday prayer become obligatory for a person? He replied that the residents of Dhul-Hulaifah used to come to attend the Friday prayer.

Ibn Aun reports that Muhammad was asked whether the people of the surrounding villages should attend the Friday prayer. He replied that the Ansar used to come for Friday prayer from the settlements around Madinah.

Hazrat Shu’bah says that I asked Hazrat Hammad whether a person should attend Jumu’ah from a distance of two farsakhs? He replied, no. I asked Hazrat Hakam, and he said that if he can come within a day, then Jumu’ah is obligatory upon him.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah says that one will come for Jumu'ah from a distance of two farsakh.

Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Friday prayer is not obligatory upon a person who is at a distance of one mile.

Hazrat Saib narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) used to live in a village called "Wahat," three miles away from Taif, and he would come to Taif to offer the Friday prayer.

Hazrat Amr bin Shu'aib was asked, "O Abu Ibrahim! Upon whom do you consider Jumu'ah to be obligatory?" He replied, "Upon the one who hears the voice of the muezzin."
