Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid used to perform prostration by gesture while praying in mud.

Hazrat Tawus says that if you are praying in mud, then perform prostration by indication.

Hazrat Aamir says that if a person is praying in mud, he should perform sajdah (prostration) by indication.

Hasan says that if you are praying in mud or on saline-affected land, then perform prostration by gesture.

Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid says that if a person is praying in mud, he should perform prostration by gesture and make the prostration more bent than the bowing.

Hazrat Abu Saeed narrates that I have seen the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrating in mud.

Hazrat Anas bin Sirin narrates that I was with Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in Kufa. When we were at the place of Attat, it had rained before our arrival and the ground had become muddy. Hazrat Anas mounted his ride and performed prayer facing the Qibla, and made the prostration by gesture. And he bent lower in prostration than in bowing.

Hazrat Salim and Hazrat Amir say that when you are in a muddy place and cannot find a spot to perform prostration, then perform prostration by indication.

A man from Hadan says that Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid was praying in mud; he would bow (in ruku) and when he intended to prostrate (sajdah), he would gesture with his head. I questioned him about this, so he said, "O fool! Do you want me to ruin my clothes?"
