Ruling on Praying in the Habbwah Position (Sitting with Knees Drawn Up)
Hadith 4704
٤٧٠٤ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال حدثنا أبو أسامة عن حسين العلم عن ابن بريدة عن عمران بن حصين أنه سأل النبي ﷺ عن الصلاة قاعدا فقال: "صَلِّ قَائِمًا فَإِنَّهُ أَفْضلُ"، ثم قال: "صَلَاةُ الْقَاعِدِ عَلَى النِّصْفِ مِنْ صَلَاةِ الْقائِم وَصَلَاة النَّائِم عَلَى النِّصْفِ مِنْ صَلَاةِ الْقَاعِدِ" (١).
Hazrat Imran bin Husain asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about performing prayer while sitting. He replied: "Perform the prayer standing, for it is superior." Then he said: "The reward for performing prayer while sitting is half of that for performing it while standing, and the reward for performing prayer while lying down is half of that for performing it while sitting."
Hadith 4705
٤٧٠٥ - حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن حبيب بن أبي ثابت عن شيخ يكنى أبا موسى عن عبد اللَّه (بن عمرو) (١) قال: أراه عن النبي ﷺ قال: "صَلَاةُ الْقَاعِدِ عَلَى النِّصْفِ مِنْ صَلَاةِ الْقَائِمِ" (٢).
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The reward for offering prayer while sitting is half of that for offering prayer while standing.
Hadith 4706
٤٧٠٦ - حدثنا ابن إدريس عن عبيد اللَّه بن عمر عن الزهري عن ابن (عمرو) (١) قال: قدمنا المدينة فأصابنا وباء حتى سبحنا (٢) قعودا فقال النبي ﷺ: "صَلَاةُ الْقَاعِدِ عَلَى النِّصْفِ مِنْ صَلَاةِ القَائِم" (٣).
Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when we came to Madinah, we were afflicted by illness due to which we began to offer voluntary prayers while sitting. Upon this, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that the reward for offering prayer while sitting is half of that for offering prayer while standing.
Hadith 4707
٤٧٠٧ - حدثنا ابن إدريس عن حصين عن مجاهد عن عبد اللَّه بن (عمرو) (١) قال: صلاة القاعد على النصف من صلاة القائم (٢).
Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the reward for offering prayer while sitting is half of that for offering prayer while standing.
Hadith 4708
٤٧٠٨ - حدثنا يحيى بن آدم عن زهير عن إبراهيم بن مهاجر عن مجاهد (أن) (١) السائب سأل عائشة عن صلاة القاعد فقالت: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "صَلَاةُ الْقَاعِدِ ⦗٥٢١⦘ عَلَى النِّصْفِ مِنْ صَلَاةِ الْقَائِمِ" (٢).
Hazrat Mujahid says that Hazrat Saib asked Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about performing prayer while sitting, so she replied that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The reward for performing prayer while sitting is half of that for performing prayer while standing.
Hadith 4709
٤٧٠٩ - حدثنا ابن إدريس (عن) (١) ليث عن مجاهد قال: صلاة القاعد غير متربع على النصف من صلاة القائم.
Hazrat Mujahid says that sitting in any position other than the four-legged posture for prayer carries half the reward of standing and performing the prayer.
Hadith 4710
٤٧١٠ - حدثنا [هشيم] (١) قال أخبرنا (٢) العوام عن المسيب بن رافع الكاهلي قال: صلاة القاعد على النصف من صلاة القائم إلا من عذر.
Hazrat Musayyib bin Rafi' says that the reward for offering prayer while sitting without an excuse is half of that for offering prayer while standing.
Hadith 4711
٤٧١١ - حدثنا معلى بن منصور وخالد بن مخلد عن عبد اللَّه بن جعفر عن إسماعيل بن محمد بن سعد عن أنس بن مالك قال: قال النبي ﷺ: "صَلَاةُ القَاعِدِ عَلَى مِثْل نِصْفِ صَلَاةِ الْقَائِمِ" (١).
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The reward for offering prayer while sitting is half of the reward for offering prayer while standing.
