Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib narrates that once the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer while in a state of impurity (janabah). Upon this, he repeated the prayer himself, and the people also repeated the prayer.

Hazrat Salim narrates that once Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) led the Fajr prayer, then he remembered that he had led the prayer without ablution, so he performed the prayer again, but the people did not repeat the prayer.

Ibrahim narrates that Hazrat Umar once led the prayer in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah), then he repeated the prayer himself but instructed the people not to repeat their prayer.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the imam will also repeat the prayer and so will the followers.

Hasan was asked: If a person, without ablution, leads people in ‘Isha, Tarawih, and Witr prayers during Ramadan, what is the ruling regarding that prayer? He replied: He himself will repeat the prayer, but the people will not repeat their prayer.

Yunus says that I asked Hazrat Ibn Sirin about this matter, so he said: Repeat the prayer and inform your followers that you led them in prayer while you were without ablution.

Ibrahim says that the imam will repeat the prayer, but the followers will not repeat it.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that if someone leads people in prayer while in a state of impurity (janabah), I will order him to perform ghusl (ritual bath) and repeat the prayer, but I will not order the people to repeat the prayer.

Hazrat Hammad says that if someone leads people in prayer while in a state of impurity (without ablution), then in my opinion, it is better that everyone repeats the prayer.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair says that if the Imam leads the prayer for the people in a state of having lost ablution, then he (the Imam) will repeat the prayer, but the people will not repeat it. Hazrat Sufyan says that in my opinion, it is better that both the Imam and the followers repeat the prayer.
