Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Hafs says that we went out with Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). We performed the obligatory prayer, and he saw one of his children performing a voluntary (nafl) prayer. He said: I have prayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Hazrat Abu Bakr, Hazrat Umar, and Hazrat Uthman, and during travel, they would not perform any prayer before or after the obligatory prayers. If I were to perform a voluntary prayer, I would perform it completely.

Ibn Aun says that we asked Mujahid whether Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to offer voluntary prayers during travel. He replied, "No." I asked, "Did he offer the two Sunnah (units) of Fajr?" He replied, "I have never seen him abandon these two Sunnah, whether in travel or at home."

Hazrat Nafi' narrates that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) would not perform optional prayers before or after the obligatory prayer while traveling, except for the Tahajjud prayer which he used to offer.

Hazrat Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) states that Hazrat Ali bin Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him) would not perform optional prayers before or after the obligatory prayer while on a journey.
