Ruling on filling gaps in the rows
Hadith 3857
٣٨٥٧ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: نا يحيى بن أبي (بكير) (١) قال: حدثنا زهير بن محمد عن عبد اللَّه بن محمد بن عقيل عن سعيد بن المسيب عن أبي سعيد الخدري: أنه سمع ⦗٣٤٠⦘ النبي ﷺ يقول: "إذا قمتم إلى الصلاة فاعدلوا صفوفكم، وسدوا الفرج؛ فإني أراكم من وراء ظهري" (٢).
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When you stand for prayer, straighten your rows and fill the gaps, for I see you from behind me.
Hadith 3858
٣٨٥٨ - حدثنا ابن نمير عن موسى بن مسلم عن عبد الرحمن بن سابط قال: ما (تغيرت) (١) الأقدام في شيء أحب إلى اللَّه من (رقع) (٢) صف.
Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Sabit says that no step is more beloved to Allah than the steps taken to fill the rows.
Hadith 3859
٣٨٥٩ - حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن خيثمة قال: [رأى ابن عمر رجلا يصلي وأمامه فرجة في الصف فدفعه إليها (١).
Hazrat Khaythamah narrates that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) saw a man who was praying while there was an empty space in the row ahead of him. Hazrat Umar sent him forward.
Hadith 3860
٣٨٦٠ - حدثنا وكيع عن الأعمش عن خيثمة قال] (١): صليت إلى جنب ابن عمر فرأى في الصف فرجة فأوما إليَّ، فلم أتقدم، قال: فتقدم هو فسدّها (٢).
Hazrat Khaythamah says that I prayed with Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). He saw an empty space in the row and signaled me to move forward. When I did not move forward, he himself stepped ahead and filled that gap.
Hadith 3861
٣٨٦١ - حدثنا وكيع عن ابن جريج عن عطاء قال: [قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: " (إياك) (١) والْفُرَجِ"، يعني: في الصف (٢).
Hazrat Ata narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Avoid leaving gaps in the rows."
Hadith 3862
٣٨٦٢ - [حدثنا وكيع عن ابن أبي ذئب عن (المقبري) (١) عن عروة بن الزبير قال (٢): قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "من سد فرجة في صف (رفعه) (٣) اللَّه بها درجة أو ⦗٣٤١⦘ بنى له (بها) (٤) بيتا (في الجنة)] (٥) (٦).
Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever fills a gap in the row, Allah Almighty will raise his rank by one degree in return, or will build a house for him in Paradise.
Hadith 3863
٣٨٦٣ - حدثنا وكيع عن هشام عن أبيه قال: كان يقال ذلك.
Hazrat Urwah says that it was said like this.
Hadith 3864
٣٨٦٤ - حدثنا وكيع عن (ابن) (١) أبي (روّاد) (٢) عن رجل عن ابن عمر قال: لأن (تسقط) (٣) (ثنيتاي) (٤) أحب إليَّ من أن أرى خللا في الصف لا أسده (٥).
Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: It is more beloved to me that my teeth be broken than that I see an empty space in the row and do not fill it.
