Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Aswad bin Yazid says that I saw Hazrat Umar bin Khattab, when he began the prayer, he said Allahu Akbar. Then he said these words: O Allah, You are pure and all praise is for You. Your name is blessed, Your majesty is exalted, and there is no deity except You.

The same hadith is narrated through another chain, with the addition that he used to say these words aloud. Ibrahim also used to say these words aloud.

Hazrat Aswad narrates that I heard Hazrat Umar saying these words at the beginning of the prayer: O Allah, You are Pure and all praise is for You. Your name is blessed, Your majesty is exalted, and there is no deity except You.

Hazrat Alqamah narrates that once I was present in the service of Hazrat Umar, and our companions said to him, "Teach us whatever you can." Then among the things Hazrat Umar taught us, I remember this: he performed ablution twice and cleaned his nose twice. Then, when he proclaimed the takbeer for prayer, he said these words: "O Allah, You are pure and all praise is for You. Your name is blessed, Your majesty is exalted, and there is no deity except You."

Hazrat Abu Ubaidah narrates that when Hazrat Abdullah would begin the prayer, he would say these words: O Allah, You are pure and all praise is for You. Your name is blessed, Your majesty is exalted, and there is no deity except You.

Hazrat Hakeem bin Jabir says that when Hazrat Umar would begin the prayer, he would say these words: O Allah, You are Pure and all praise is for You. Your name is blessed, Your majesty is exalted, and there is no deity except You.

Hazrat Ibn Ujlan says that Hazrat Abu Bakr also used to say these words.

Hazrat Abu Wa'il says that when Hazrat Umar would begin the prayer, he used to say these words: O Allah, You are pure and all praise is for You. Your name is blessed, Your majesty is exalted, and there is no deity except You.

Hazrat Jubair bin Mut’im narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) begin the prayer by saying Allahu Akbar three times, Alhamdu lillahi kathiran three times, Subhanallahi bukratan wa asila three times, then he said these words: I seek refuge with Allah from the disease incited by the accursed Satan, from the arrogance imposed by him, and from the poetry inspired by him.

Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once, on a night in Ramadan, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out from a hut made of date-palm bark, then poured a bucket of water over himself and said: Allah is the Greatest, He is the Owner of Sovereignty, Majesty, Grandeur, and Greatness.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would begin the prayer, after saying Allahu Akbar, he would recite these words: I have turned my face, being devoted exclusively, towards the One who created the heavens and the earth. And I am not among those who associate partners with Him. My prayer, my sacrifice, my life, and my death are for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, who has no partner. I have been commanded to do this, and I am the first of those who submit. O Allah! You are the King, there is none worthy of worship except You, You are my Lord and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and I confess my sins, so forgive all my sins, for surely none forgives sins except You. Guide me to the best of character, for none can guide to the best of character except You. Protect me from bad character, for none can protect me from bad character except You. I am present and I consider it an honor to be present in Your service. All goodness is in Your hands, You are my support and my refuge, You are blessed and exalted. I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You.

Hazrat Amr bin Maymoon says that once Hazrat Umar was at the place of Dhu’l-Hulayfah while going towards Makkah. There, he led us in the Fajr prayer, and after saying Allahu Akbar, he said these words: O Allah, You are pure and all praise is for You. Your name is blessed, Your majesty is exalted, and there is no deity except You.

Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri narrates that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would begin the prayer, he would say these words: O Allah, You are Pure and all praise is for You. Your name is blessed, Your majesty is exalted, and there is no deity except You.

Hazrat Dhahhak, regarding the command of Allah Almighty { وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّکَ حِینَ تَقُومُ }, says that its meaning is: When you stand for prayer, say these words: O Allah, You are Pure and all praise is for You. Your name is blessed, Your majesty is exalted, and there is no deity except You.

Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud says that the most beloved words to Allah from His servant are that he says: O Allah, You are pure and to You belongs all praise. Your name is blessed, Your majesty is exalted, and there is no deity except You. O my Lord! I have wronged myself, so forgive my sins, surely none forgives sins except You.

Hazrat Aswad narrates that when Hazrat Umar would begin the prayer, he would recite these words aloud for us to hear: O Allah, You are Pure and all praise is for You. Your name is blessed, Your majesty is exalted, and there is no deity except You.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abi Khaleel narrates that when Hazrat Ali would say the Takbeer-e-Tahreema for prayer, he would say these words: "O Allah! You are pure and there is no deity except You. I have wronged myself, so forgive my sins, for surely none forgives sins except You."

This hadith is narrated through another chain as well.

Hazrat Abu Al-Haitham narrates that I heard Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) saying these words at the beginning of prayer: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is Pure, and praise is for Him morning and evening. O Allah, make standing before You the most beloved thing to me, and make it the thing I fear the most.
