Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Umar says that a person in a state of major impurity (janabah) cannot perform tayammum, even if he does not find water for a whole month.

Hazrat Abdullah says that if you become junub during a journey, do not perform prayer until you find water, and if your ablution breaks, then perform tayammum and offer prayer.

Dhahhak says that Hazrat Abdullah had retracted his statement regarding tayammum.

Hazrat Zubaid says that once I became junub, and I did not have water. I asked Hazrat Abu Atiyyah about this, and he said, "Do not pray." I asked Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair, and he said, "Perform tayammum and offer the prayer."

Hazrat Shaqiq narrates that once I was sitting with Hazrat Abdullah and Hazrat Abu Musa. Hazrat Abu Musa said: "O Abu Abdur Rahman! What is your opinion if a person is in a state of janabah and does not find water for a month, what should he do about prayer?" Hazrat Abdullah replied that he should not perform tayammum even if he does not find water for a month. Hazrat Abu Musa said: "Then what should be done about this verse of Surah Al-Ma'idah: If you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth?" Hazrat Abdullah replied: "If people are given this concession, they will start performing tayammum even out of fear of cold water."
