Those Who Consider Sea Water Insufficient or Disliked for Wudu
Hadith 1404
١٤٠٤ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا وكيع عن شعبة عن قتادة عن عقبة بن صهبان قال: سمعت ابن عمر يقول: التيمم أحب إليَّ من الوضوء من ماء البحر (١).
Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that in my view, performing tayammum is better than performing ablution with sea water.
Hadith 1405
١٤٠٥ - حدثنا أبو داود الطيالسي عن هشام عن قتادة عن (أبي أيوب) (١) عن عبد اللَّه بن عمرو قال: ماء البحر لا يجزئ من وضوء، ولا جنابة، [إن تحت البحر نارا ثم ماءً ثم نارا (٢)] (٣).
Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the water of the sea is not sufficient for ghusl janabat and wudu, because beneath the sea there is fire, then water, then fire.
Hadith 1406
١٤٠٦ - حدثنا ابن علية عن هشام الدستوائي عن يحيى بن أبي كثير عن رجل من الأنصار (عن أبي هريرة) (١) قال: ماءان لا يجزئان من غسل الجنابة: ماء البحر، وماء الحمام (٢).
Hazrat Abu Huraira states that there are two types of water with which ghusl of janabah cannot be performed: one is sea water and the other is bathhouse water.
Hadith 1407
١٤٠٧ - حدثنا إسحاق بن سليمان عن أبي جعفر عن الربيع بن أنس عن أبي العالية: أنه ركب البحر، (فنفد) (١) ماؤهم فتوضأ بنبيذ، وكره أن يتوضأ (من ماء) (٢) البحر.
Hazrat Rabi’ bin Anas narrates that Hazrat Abu Al-‘Aliyah was on a sea journey when their water ran out. Hazrat Abu Al-‘Aliyah performed ablution with nabidh and considered performing ablution with sea water to be disliked.
