Hazrat Muhammad bin Al-Hanafiyyah narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came out from one of his blessed chambers and sat at its door, and (it was his habit that) when he, peace and blessings be upon him, sat alone, no one would come to him until he, peace and blessings be upon him, himself called someone. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Call Abu Bakr to me. The narrator says: So Abu Bakr came and sat in front of him, peace and blessings be upon him. He, peace and blessings be upon him, whispered to Abu Bakr for quite a while, then he, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed Abu Bakr, so he sat to his right or left side. Then he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Call Umar to me. So Umar came and sat in Abu Bakr’s place (in front), and he, peace and blessings be upon him, also whispered to him for a long time. During this, Umar’s voice became loud and he said: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! These are the chiefs of disbelief. These are the people who thought you were a sorcerer, called you a soothsayer, considered you a liar, and accused you of fabricating lies. Umar mentioned all those things that the people of Makkah used to say about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Then he, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed Umar to sit on his other side. So one of these two elders sat on his right and the other on his left. Then the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, called the people and said: Shall I not tell you the example of your two companions? The people said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, turned his blessed face towards Abu Bakr and said: Know that Ibrahim was softer regarding Allah Almighty than milk mixed with oil. Then he, peace and blessings be upon him, turned his blessed face towards Umar and said: Nuh was harder regarding Allah than stone. And the decision is as Umar has made. Then the companions began to prepare and stood up, and followed behind Abu Bakr, saying: O Abu Bakr! We do not like to ask Umar, but what did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, whisper to you? Abu Bakr said: He, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me: What do you say about fighting the people of Makkah? Abu Bakr said: I replied: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! They are your own people. And he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I see that soon these people will obey me. Abu Bakr said: Then he, peace and blessings be upon him, called Umar, and Umar said: These people are the chiefs of disbelief, and he mentioned every bad thing they used to say. And by Allah! Until the people of Makkah are humiliated, the Arabs will not be humiliated. So he, peace and blessings be upon him, has commanded you to perform jihad so that you may attack Makkah.
