The narrator said: Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered himself and sat up, and said: I bear witness that we went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and when we were on part of the road, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the voices of Sayyiduna Hasan and Sayyiduna Husayn crying while they were with their mother. He (peace and blessings be upon him) hastened his pace until he reached them, and I heard him say to her (their mother): "What is the matter with my two sons?" She said: Thirst. The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached back to a waterskin to look for water in it, and on that day water was only in scattered small pools, and the people were in need of water. He (peace and blessings be upon him) called out: "Does any of you have water with him?" There was no one left who did not reach back to his saddle to look for water in his waterskin, but none of them found a single drop. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hand me one of them." So she handed him over to him from beneath the curtain, and I saw the whiteness of her forearms as she handed him over. He (peace and blessings be upon him) took him and pressed him to his chest, and he was crying loudly and would not stop. He put out his tongue for him, and he began to suck it until he calmed down or became settled, and I did not hear him cry, while the other was still crying as before and would not stop. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hand me the other." She handed him over too, and he did the same with him, so both became quiet, and I heard no sound from them. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Move on." So we split to the right and left away from the litters until we met him on the open part of the road. So how could I not love these two when I have seen this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?

When he intended to bow, he would take hold of them gently with his hand and place them on the ground, and when he returned (to prostration) they would return as well, until he completed his prayer and, having finished, seated them on his thighs. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I stood up and went to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, shall I take them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." Just then lightning flashed, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go to your mother." So they kept walking in its light until they went inside.

So she came leading her two sons, each of them held by one hand, and Sayyiduna Ali was walking behind them, until they came in to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) seated the two of them in his lap, Sayyiduna Ali sat on his right, and Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) sat on his left. Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I took from beneath me a cloak that was our bedding on the sleeping place in the house, and there was a pot in which there was khazirah (a dish of meat and flour). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "Call for me your husband and your two sons, Hasan and Husayn." So she called them, and they all sat together eating from that pot. She said: I was praying in that room, and this verse was revealed: "Allah only intends to remove all impurity from you, O people of the household, and to purify you thoroughly" [Surah al-Ahzab: 33]. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) took the remaining part of the cloak and covered them with it, then he brought his right hand out of the cloak and raised it towards the sky, then said: "O Allah, these are my household and my close ones, so remove impurity from them and purify them thoroughly." Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I put my head into the house and said: O Messenger of Allah, am I also with you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said twice: "You are upon good."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty divided creation into two parts and placed me in the better of them; that is His saying: 'And the companions of the right' [Surah al-Waqi'ah: 27], 'And the companions of the left' [Surah al-Waqi'ah: 41]. So I am of the companions of the right, and I am the best of the companions of the right. Then He divided the two parts into households and placed me in the better household of them; that is His saying: 'Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right? And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? And the foremost, they are the foremost' [Surah al-Waqi'ah]. So I am the best of the foremost. Then He made the households into tribes and placed me in the best tribe of them; that is His saying: 'Nations and tribes' [Surah al-Hujurat: 13]. So I am the most God-fearing of the children of Adam and the most honoured of them before Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and (I say this) without boasting. Then He made the tribes into households and placed me in the best household of them; that is His saying: 'Allah only intends to remove all impurity from you, O people of the household, and to purify you thoroughly' [Surah al-Ahzab: 33]."

The father of Ali bin Ali al-Hilali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the illness in which he passed away, and saw that Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was at his head. She began to weep until her voice rose, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze towards her and said: "My beloved Fatimah, what makes you weep?" She said: I fear being left helpless after you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O my dear daughter, do you not know that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, looked upon the earth and chose from it your father and sent him with His message, then He looked again and chose from it your husband, and revealed to me that I should marry you to him? O Fatimah, we are a household to whom Allah has given seven qualities that were not given to anyone before us and will not be given to anyone after us: I am the Seal of the Prophets, the most honoured of the prophets before Allah, and the most beloved of creation to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and I am your father; my executor (wasi) is the best of executors and the most beloved of them to Allah, and he is your husband; our martyr is the best of martyrs and the most beloved of them to Allah, and he is your uncle Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib, who is the uncle of your father and the uncle of your husband; and from us is one who has two green wings with which he flies in Paradise with the angels wherever he wishes, and he is the cousin of your father and the brother of your husband; and from us are the two grandsons of this Ummah, and they are your two sons Hasan and Husayn, and they are the leaders of the youth of Paradise, and their father - by the One who sent me with the truth - is better than them both. O Fatimah, by the One who sent me with the truth, from these two will be the Mahdi of this Ummah, when the world is in turmoil and chaos, trials become manifest, roads are cut off, and people raid one another, so that no elder shows mercy to a younger one and no younger one honours an elder. At that time Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will raise from these two one who will open the fortresses of misguidance and sealed hearts; he will establish the religion at the end of time just as I established it at the beginning of time, and he will fill the world with justice just as it had been filled with oppression. O Fatimah, do not grieve and do not weep, for Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is more merciful and more compassionate to you than I am, and that is because of your standing with me and your place in my heart. And Allah has married you to your husband, who is the noblest of your household in lineage, the most honoured in rank, the most merciful to the subjects, the most just in equal distribution, and the most discerning in judgement. And I have asked my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, that you be the first of my household to join me." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) remained after him only seventy-five days until Allah joined her with him (peace and blessings be upon him)."

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrate concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "When the help of Allah and the victory come, and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes, then glorify the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness; indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance" [Surah al-Nasr: 1-2]. They said: When this surah was revealed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Jibril, news of my death has come." Jibril (peace be upon him) said: The Hereafter is better for you than this world, and your Lord will soon give you so much that you will be pleased. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to call out "al-Salatu jami'ah (the prayer is gathering)", and the Muhajirun and the Ansar gathered in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit, praised and extolled Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, then delivered a sermon at which hearts trembled and eyes wept. Then he said: "O people, what kind of prophet have I been to you?" The people said: May Allah give you the best reward of prophethood; you have been to us like a merciful father and like a sincere, compassionate brother. You conveyed to us the messages of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and delivered His revelation to us, and you called to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good admonition. So may Allah reward you on our behalf with the best reward He has ever given a prophet on behalf of his Ummah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "O company of Muslims, I adjure you by Allah and by the right I have over you: whoever has suffered any wrong from me, let him stand up and take retribution from me." No one stood up, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) adjured them a second time, and still no one stood up. Then he adjured them a third time: "O company of Muslims, I adjure you by Allah and by the right I have over you: whoever has suffered any wrong from me, let him stand up and take retribution from me before retribution is taken on the Day of Resurrection." Then an old man from among the Muslims, whose name was Ukkashah, stood up, stepped over the people until he stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: May my father and mother be ransomed for you. Had you not adjured us time after time, I would never have come forward for such a thing. I was with you on a military expedition; when Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, granted us victory and helped His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we were on the way back, my she-camel came alongside your she-camel. I got down from the she-camel and came close to you to kiss your thigh, and you raised the stick and struck me on my flank, and I do not know whether you did it deliberately or meant to strike the she-camel. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I seek refuge in the majesty of Allah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) should have struck you deliberately. O Bilal, go to the house of Fatimah and bring me the stick that is stripped (thin and smooth)." Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) left the mosque with his hand on his head, calling out: This is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) giving retribution from his own self. He knocked at the door of Sayyidah Fatimah and said: O daughter of the Messenger of Allah, give me the stick. Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Bilal, what does my father want with the stick? This is neither a day of Hajj nor a day of battle. Bilal said: O Fatimah, what do you know of the state your father is in? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is bidding farewell to the religion and departing from the world, and is giving retribution from his own self. Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Bilal, who is there whose heart would be content to take retribution from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? O Bilal, tell Hasan and Husayn to stand before this man so that he may take retribution from them, and not to let him take retribution from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Bilal entered the mosque and gave the stick to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the stick to Ukkashah. When Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) saw this, they stood up and said: O Ukkashah, here we both are before you; take retribution from us and do not take retribution from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them both: "Go, O Abu Bakr, and you too go, O Umar; Allah knows your place and your rank." Then Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O Ukkashah, in life I stand before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and my heart is not content that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) should be struck. Here are my back and my belly; take retribution from me with your hand and give me a hundred lashes, but do not take retribution from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali, sit down; Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, knows your place and your intention." Then Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) stood up and said: O Ukkashah, do you not know that we are the two grandsons of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? So taking retribution from us is like taking retribution from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them both: "Sit down, O coolness of my eyes; may Allah never forget this stand of yours." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ukkashah, strike if you are going to strike." Ukkashah said: O Messenger of Allah, you struck me when my belly was bare. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) uncovered his belly, and the Muslims cried out weeping and said: Do you think Ukkashah will really strike the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? When Ukkashah looked at the whiteness of the belly of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), as if it were fine Egyptian cloth, he could not restrain himself; he bent over and began kissing his belly, saying: May my father and mother be ransomed for you; who is there who has the strength to take retribution from you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Either strike or forgive." Ukkashah said: I have forgiven you, in the hope that Allah will forgive me on the Day of Resurrection. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wishes to look at my companion in Paradise, let him look at this elder." So the Muslims stood up and began kissing Ukkashah between his eyes, saying: Glad tidings to you, glad tidings to you! You have attained the lofty ranks and the companionship of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

From that day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill, and he remained ill for eighteen days while people came to visit him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was born on a Monday, received prophethood on a Monday, and passed away on a Monday. When Sunday came, his illness grew severe. Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) called the adhan, then stood at the door and called out: Al-salamu alayka ya Rasulallah wa rahmatullah (peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, and the mercy of Allah); come to the prayer, may Allah have mercy on you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard Bilal's voice, and Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Bilal, today the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is occupied with his own condition. So Bilal went into the mosque. When the morning grew bright he said: By Allah, I will not establish the prayer without seeking permission from my master, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So he returned to the door and called out: Al-salamu alayka ya Rasulallah wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh (peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings); come to the prayer, may Allah have mercy on you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard Bilal's voice and said: "Come in, O Bilal. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is occupied with his own condition; tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Bilal went out with his hand on his head, saying: O Allah, help! Alas for the cutting off of hope! Alas for the breaking of my back! Would that my mother had never given birth to me, and since she did give birth to me, would that I had not witnessed this day concerning the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he said: O Abu Bakr, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has ordered you to lead the people in prayer. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward for the people, and he was a tender-hearted man; when he saw the place of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) empty, he fell down unconscious, and the Muslims cried out weeping. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the clamour of the people and said: "What is this clamour?" It was said: O Messenger of Allah, it is the clamour of the Muslims, for fear of losing you. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Ali bin Abi Talib and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), leaned on them both and went out to the mosque, and led the people in two light rak'ahs. Then he turned his beautiful face towards them and said: "O company of Muslims, I entrust you to Allah; you are in the hope and safety of Allah, and Allah is your guardian after me. O company of Muslims, keep fearing Allah and guard obedience to Him after me, for I am about to depart from the world; this is the first day of the Hereafter and the last of the days of this world."

Then when Monday came, the severity of the illness increased, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed to the Angel of Death: Descend to My beloved and chosen one, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), in the best of forms, and be gentle with him when taking his soul. So the Angel of Death descended, stood at the door in the form of a Bedouin and said: Al-salamu alaykum (peace be upon you), O people of the house of prophethood, the source of the message and the place where the angels come and go! May I come in? Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Fatimah: Answer the man. Fatimah said: May Allah reward you for coming, O servant of Allah; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is occupied with his own condition. He called a second time, and Aishah said: O Fatimah, answer the man. Fatimah again said the same: May Allah reward you for coming, O servant of Allah; the Messenger of Allah is occupied with his own condition. Then he called a third time: Al-salamu alaykum (peace be upon you), O people of the house of prophethood, the source of the message and the place where the angels come and go! May I come in? Entering is unavoidable. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the voice of the Angel of Death and said: "O Fatimah, who is at the door?" She said: O Messenger of Allah, there is a man at the door asking permission to enter; we have answered him time after time, and the third time he called out with such a voice that my hair stood on end and my body trembled. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "O Fatimah, do you know who is at the door? This is the destroyer of pleasures and the separator of gatherings; this is the one who makes wives widows and children orphans; this is the one who makes houses desolate and fills the graves. This is the Angel of Death. Come in, may Allah have mercy on you, O Angel of Death." The Angel of Death came in to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Angel of Death, have you come to me to visit or to take my soul?" He said: I have come both to visit and to take your soul, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has commanded me not to enter upon you without your permission and not to take your soul without your permission; if you permit, well and good, otherwise I will return to my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Angel of Death, where did you leave my beloved Jibril?" He said: I left him in the lowest heaven, and the angels are offering him condolences concerning you. Hardly had this been said when Jibril (peace be upon him) came and sat at his head. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Jibril, this is the departure from the world; tell me, what is there for me with Allah?" He said: O beloved of Allah, I give you glad tidings that I have left the gates of heaven open, and the angels standing in rows with greetings and fragrant herbs, welcoming your soul, O Muhammad. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All praise is for my Lord. O Jibril, give me more glad tidings." He said: I give you glad tidings that the gates of the Gardens have been opened, its rivers have begun to flow, its trees have bent low, and its houris have adorned themselves for the arrival of your soul, O Muhammad. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All praise is for my Lord; give me more glad tidings, O Jibril." He said: On the Day of Resurrection you will be the first to intercede and the first whose intercession is accepted. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All praise is for my Lord." Jibril (peace be upon him) said: O my beloved, what else do you wish to ask me? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I ask you about my grief and my worry: who will look after the reciters of the Qur'an after me? Who will look after the fasting of Ramadan after me? Who will look after the pilgrims to the Sacred House of Allah after me? Who will look after my pure Ummah after me?" He said: Rejoice, O beloved of Allah, for Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: Paradise has been forbidden to all the prophets and nations until you and your Ummah enter it, O Muhammad. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now my heart is at peace. O Angel of Death, now carry out what you have been commanded."

Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, when you pass away, who will wash you? In what will you be shrouded? Who will lead the funeral prayer over you? And who will go down into the grave? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali, you will wash me, al-Fadl bin Abbas will pour the water for you, and Jibril (peace be upon him) will be the third with you both. When you have finished washing me, shroud me in three new garments, and Jibril (peace be upon him) will bring me perfume from Paradise. When you have placed me on the bier, place me in the mosque and go out, for the first to pray over me will be my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, from above His Throne, then Jibril (peace be upon him), then Mika'il, then Israfil (peace be upon them both), then the angels in group after group; then you should come in and stand in rows, and let no one go ahead of me."

Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Today is the day of parting; so when will I meet you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O my daughter, you will meet me on the Day of Resurrection at the Pool, while I am giving drink to those of my Ummah who come to the Pool." She said: And if I do not find you there, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will find me at the Scale, interceding for my Ummah." She said: And if I do not find you there, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will find me at the Sirat (the Bridge), calling upon my Lord: Save my Ummah from the Fire."

Then the Angel of Death drew near and set about taking the soul of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When the soul reached the knees, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Oh." When the soul reached the navel, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cried out: "Alas, the distress!" Fatimah (peace be upon her) said: My father, I too am in distress at your distress. When the soul reached the chest, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cried out: "O Jibril, how bitter death is!" Jibril (peace be upon him) turned his face away from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Jibril, do you dislike looking at me?" Jibril (peace be upon him) said: O my beloved, who is there who has the strength to look at you in the throes of death? Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away.

Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) washed him (peace and blessings be upon him), Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) kept pouring the water, and Jibril (peace be upon him) was with them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was shrouded in three new garments, carried on a bier, then taken into the mosque and placed there, and the people went out from him. The first to pray over him was his Lord, the Exalted, from above His Throne, then Jibril, then Mika'il, then Israfil, then the angels in group after group. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We heard a low murmur in the mosque but saw no one; then we heard a caller calling out: Come in, may Allah have mercy on you, and pray over your Prophet. So we went in and stood in rows as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had commanded; we said the takbir with the takbir of Jibril (peace be upon him) and prayed over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) according to the prayer of Jibril (peace be upon him), and none of us went ahead of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Ali bin Abi Talib and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) went down into the grave, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was buried. When the people had gone back, Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abu al-Hasan, have you buried the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes. Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: How were your hearts content to pour earth upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Was there no mercy in your breasts for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Was he not the teacher of good? He said: Of course, O Fatimah, but it is the command of Allah, which no one can avert. Then she began to weep and lament, saying: O my father, now the coming of Jibril (peace be upon him) has been cut off; Jibril used to bring us revelation from the heavens.

Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were sitting around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) came and said: O Messenger of Allah, Hasan and Husayn are lost. The narrator said: That was in the forenoon, meaning the time when the sun had risen high. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Get up and look for my two sons." The narrator said: Each man set out in his own direction, and I went with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) kept going until he reached the foot of a mountain, and there were Sayyiduna Hasan and Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) clinging to each other, and a snake was standing on its tail with something like fire coming out of its mouth. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) hurried towards it, and it turned as if speaking to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then it slithered away and entered a crevice in some rocks. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the two of them, separated them from each other, wiped their faces and said: "May my father and mother be ransomed for you; how honoured you both are before Allah!" Then he lifted one of them onto his right shoulder and the other onto his left shoulder. I said: Glad tidings to you both; what an excellent mount your mount is! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And what excellent riders they are, and their father is better than them both."

A man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, what are the two weighty things? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The greater is the Book of Allah, a rope one end of which is in the Hand of Allah and the other end in your hands; so hold fast to it and you will neither stray nor go astray. And the lesser is my 'itrah (kin). These two will never separate until they come to me at the Pool, and I have asked my Lord for this for them.
