Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, he said: Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Nufayli narrated to us, he said: Hatim ibn Isma'il narrated to us, he said: Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, he said: I entered upon Jabir ibn Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them both, and I said: Inform me about the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He gestured with his hand and counted nine, then said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stayed for nine years and did not perform Hajj, then in the tenth year it was announced among the people that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was going to perform Hajj. Many people came to al-Madinah, all of them seeking to follow the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and to do as he did. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out and we set out with him until we reached Dhu al-Hulayfah. Asma' bint Umays gave birth to Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr, may Allah be pleased with them both. She sent to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, asking: What should I do? He said: Bathe, bind yourself with a cloth, and enter into Ihram. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed in the mosque, then mounted al-Qaswa' (his camel), and when his camel stood upright with him on al-Bayda', I looked as far as I could see in front of him, there were riders and walkers, and on his right the same, and on his left the same, and behind him the same, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was among us, and the Qur'an was being revealed to him, and he knew its interpretation. Whatever he did, we did. He began with the proclamation of Tawhid:
"Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, inna al-hamda wa al-ni'mata laka wa al-mulk, la sharika lak."
He said: And the people proclaimed this with which they proclaim, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not reject anything of it, and he adhered to his Talbiyah. Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, said: We intended nothing but Hajj, we did not know of 'Umrah, until we came to the House with him, he touched the Corner (the Black Stone), then walked briskly three times and walked four times, then he went to the Maqam of Ibrahim and recited: "And take the Maqam of Ibrahim as a place of prayer" __QUR_2_125__, and he placed the Maqam between himself and the House. He said: My father used to say—and I do not know that he mentioned it except from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him—that he would recite in those two rak'ahs: "Qul huwa Allahu ahad" and "Qul ya ayyuhal kafirun." Then he returned to the House and touched the Corner, then went out by the gate to al-Safa. When he approached al-Safa, he recited: "Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah" __QUR_2_158__, "I begin with what Allah began with." So he began with al-Safa, ascended it until he saw the House, then magnified Allah and declared His Oneness, and said: "La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu al-mulk wa lahu al-hamd, yuhyi wa yumit wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir, la ilaha illa Allah wahdahu, anjaza wa'dahu wa nasara 'abdahu wa hazama al-ahzaba wahdahu." Then he supplicated between that, and said the like of this three times. Then he descended to al-Marwah, and when his feet reached the bottom of the valley, he walked briskly in the valley, then when he ascended, he walked until he came to al-Marwah, and did on al-Marwah as he had done on al-Safa, until when it was the last round on al-Marwah, he said: "If I had known beforehand what I have come to know, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal and would have made it an 'Umrah. So whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal, let him exit Ihram and make it an 'Umrah." So all the people exited Ihram and shortened their hair, except the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and those who had the sacrificial animal with them.
Suraqah ibn Ju'shum stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, is this for this year only or forever?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, interlaced his fingers and said: "The 'Umrah has entered into the Hajj like this," twice, "No, but forever and ever." He said: Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, arrived from Yemen with the sacrificial animals of the Prophet, and found Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, had combed her hair, put on dyed clothes, and applied kohl. Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, disapproved of that for her. She said: "My father ordered me to do this." He said: Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, used to say: "I went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, complaining about Fatimah for what she had done, seeking a ruling from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding what she had mentioned from him, and I disapproved of that for her." He said: "She has spoken the truth, she has spoken the truth. What did you say when you assumed Ihram for Hajj?" He said: "I said: O Allah, I enter into Ihram with what Your Messenger enters into Ihram with." He said: "Then you have the sacrificial animal with you, so do not exit Ihram." So the total number of sacrificial animals brought by Ali from Yemen and those brought by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, from al-Madinah was one hundred. So all the people exited Ihram and shortened their hair, except the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and those who had the sacrificial animal with them.
When it was the Day of Tarwiyah and they headed to Mina, they entered into Ihram for Hajj. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, rode and prayed at Mina the Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr prayers. Then he stayed a little until the sun rose. He ordered a tent of hair to be set up for him at Namirah, and it was set up for him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out, and Quraysh did not doubt that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would stand at al-Mash'ar al-Haram at Muzdalifah, as Quraysh used to do in the pre-Islamic period. But the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, continued until he came to Arafah and found the tent had been set up for him at Namirah, and he stayed there until the sun had declined. He ordered al-Qaswa' to be saddled for him, and he rode until he came to the bottom of the valley and addressed the people, saying:
"Indeed, your blood and your wealth are sacred to you as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Verily, all matters of the pre-Islamic period are under my feet abolished, and the blood of the pre-Islamic period is abolished under my feet, and the first blood I abolish is our blood: the blood of Ibn Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith, who was nursed among Banu Sa'd and was killed by Hudhayl. And the usury of the pre-Islamic period is abolished, and the first usury I abolish is our usury: the usury of al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, it is all abolished. Fear Allah regarding women, for you have taken them by the trust of Allah and made their private parts lawful by the word of Allah. You have rights over them that they do not allow anyone you dislike to sit on your beds. If they do that, then strike them with a beating that is not severe, and they have a right over you for their provision and clothing in kindness. I have left among you that which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray after it: the Book of Allah. And you will be asked about me, so what will you say?" They said: "We bear witness that you have conveyed the messages of your Lord, and have given advice to your nation, and have fulfilled what was upon you." He raised his forefinger to the sky and then pointed it toward the people and said: "O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness."
Then Bilal called the Adhan, then established the prayer and he prayed Zuhr, then established the prayer and he prayed Asr, and he did not pray anything between them. Then he mounted al-Qaswa' until he came to the standing place, and made the belly of his camel al-Qaswa' facing the rocks, and made the path of the pedestrians in front of him, and faced the Qiblah, and remained standing until the sun set and the yellow color had gone a little and the disk of the sun had disappeared. He seated Usamah ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with them both, behind him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out, pulling the reins of al-Qaswa' so tightly that her head touched the saddle, and he was signaling with his right hand: "Calmness, calmness." Whenever he came to a hill, he would loosen the reins a little until she ascended. He continued until he came to Muzdalifah, where he combined Maghrib and Isha with one Adhan and two Iqamahs. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, lay down until dawn broke, and he prayed Fajr when the morning was clear.
Ibn Yahya said: Al-Hasan ibn Bashir told us in this hadith from Jabir: "At this place, with one Adhan and one Iqamah," and al-Nufayli did not say this.
Then he mounted al-Qaswa' until he came to al-Mash'ar al-Haram, ascended it, praised Allah, magnified Him, and declared His Oneness, and remained standing until it became very bright. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out before the sun rose, and he seated al-Fadl ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, behind him. He was a man with beautiful hair, white and handsome. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out, the women were passing by quickly, and al-Fadl began to look at them. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, placed his hand on al-Fadl's face, and al-Fadl turned his face to the other side, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, moved his hand to the other side, and al-Fadl turned his face to the other side, looking, until he came to Muhassir and moved a little quickly, then took the middle road which brings you out at the greatest Jamrah, until he came to the Jamrah at the tree. He threw seven pebbles, saying Takbir with each pebble, like the pebbles of Khadhf, throwing from the bottom of the valley. Then he went to the place of sacrifice and slaughtered sixty-three with his own hand, and ordered Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, to slaughter what remained, meaning what was left, and he included him in the sacrificial animals. Then he ordered that a piece be taken from each animal, and they were put in a pot and cooked, and he and Ali ate from its meat and drank from its broth. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went to the House and prayed Zuhr in Mecca. He came to Banu Abd al-Muttalib while they were drawing water at Zamzam. He said: "Draw water, Banu Abd al-Muttalib. Were it not that the people would overcome you in your watering, I would have drawn water with you." So they handed him a bucket and he, peace and blessings be upon him, drank from it.
