It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: We were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) under the shade of a tree between Makkah and Madinah when an ill-mannered and harsh Bedouin came and said: «السلام علیکم»! He (the Prophet) said: "And upon you."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues: The minimum form of greeting is "as-salamu alaykum" and the minimum reply is "wa alaykum as-salam" or "wa alaykum." However, greeting with "as-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah" or "as-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh" and replying with "wa alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh" is superior.
