📚 Taken from: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām

❖ Question:

What advice would you give to a Muslim who works with non-Muslims (kuffār)?
Is it permissible to work in such an environment?

❖ Answer:

Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd:

For a Muslim who is working alongside disbelievers, the following guidance and precautions are advised:

✅ 1. Seek a Better Alternative, If Possible

◈ One should strive to find a profession or workplace where there is no involvement of enemies of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, i.e., where there are only Muslims.

If such an option is available, it is better and more desirable from the perspective of religious safety and community.

✅ 2. Permissibility in Case of Necessity

If:

◈ No alternative employment is available,
◈ And it becomes a necessity or compulsion,

→ then working with non-Muslims is permissible with conditions, namely:

➊ The Muslim should focus solely on his work.

➋ The non-Muslim colleagues should also mind their work only.

➌ The Muslim must not harbor love, friendship, or emotional affinity toward disbelievers.

✅ 3. Adherence to Sharʿī Etiquettes in Dealing with Non-Muslims

Such a person must:

◈ Uphold all Islamic rulings in interaction, including matters like greetings and conduct.

Avoid attending their funerals.
Do not participate in their religious festivals or ceremonies.
Refrain from congratulating them on their religious occasions or holidays.

These are essential boundaries that must be respected and maintained.

✅ 4. Make Efforts in Da‘wah (Islamic Invitation)

◈ The Muslim should, as much as possible, try to convey the message of Islam to non-Muslim co-workers.

◈ Let your character, ethics, and words reflect the beauty of Islam, and where suitable, invite them towards the truth.

❖ Final Summary:

◈ Working with non-Muslims is discouraged if a better alternative exists.
◈ In situations of necessity, it is permissible with conditions.
◈ The Muslim must guard his faith, conduct, and boundaries,
and where possible, be a means of guidance for others.

This is what I hold to be correct. And Allah knows best what is right.
