Working with Non-Muslims – Sharʿī Guidelines and Precautionary Measures
Taken from: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām
What advice would you give to a Muslim who works with non-Muslims (kuffār)?
Is it permissible to work in such an environment?
Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd:
For a Muslim who is working alongside disbelievers, the following guidance and precautions are advised:
◈ One should strive to find a profession or workplace where there is no involvement of enemies of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, i.e., where there are only Muslims.
◈ If such an option is available, it is better and more desirable from the perspective of religious safety and community.
If:
◈ No alternative employment is available,
◈ And it becomes a necessity or compulsion,
→ then working with non-Muslims is permissible with conditions, namely:
Such a person must:
◈ Uphold all Islamic rulings in interaction, including matters like greetings and conduct.
◈ Avoid attending their funerals.
◈ Do not participate in their religious festivals or ceremonies.
◈ Refrain from congratulating them on their religious occasions or holidays.
These are essential boundaries that must be respected and maintained.
◈ The Muslim should, as much as possible, try to convey the message of Islam to non-Muslim co-workers.
◈ Let your character, ethics, and words reflect the beauty of Islam, and where suitable, invite them towards the truth.
◈ Working with non-Muslims is discouraged if a better alternative exists.
◈ In situations of necessity, it is permissible with conditions.
◈ The Muslim must guard his faith, conduct, and boundaries,
and where possible, be a means of guidance for others.
هٰذَا مَا عِندِي، وَاللّٰهُ أَعْلَمُ بِالصَّوَاب
This is what I hold to be correct. And Allah knows best what is right.
