Witr Prayer After the Dawn (Fajr)

Written by: Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Ameenpuri (Hafidhahullah)

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"Whoever oversleeps and misses their Witr or forgets to pray it, should offer it when they remember, even if it is in the morning."

[Sunan Abi Dawood: 1431, Sunan al-Daraqutni: 22/2, Hadith: 2621, Al-Mustadrak 'ala al-Sahihayn by Al-Hakim: 1/302, Al-Sunan al-Kubra by Al-Bayhaqi: 2/480, and its chain is authentic]

Imam Hakim (may Allah have mercy on him) has declared this Hadith "Sahih" according to the conditions of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim. Hafiz Dhahabi (may Allah have mercy on him) agreed with him. Hafiz Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) in [Khulasat al-Ahkam: 1905] has also graded its chain as "Sahih."

Thus, anyone who oversleeps can perform the Witr prayer after the Fajr adhan (call to prayer).
