Hadith 24: Satan running away while expelling air after hearing the Adhan
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
"When the call to prayer (Adhan) is made, Satan turns his back and runs away, releasing a foul wind, and goes as far as he cannot hear the Adhan. Then, when the Mu'adhdhin becomes silent, he comes forward. When the Iqamah is said, he again turns his back and runs away. When the Iqamah is completed, he comes forward again and stands between the worshiper and his heart, whispering to him, 'Remember this, remember that,' and reminds him of things he had not remembered, until the worshiper forgets how much prayer he has performed."
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, Al-Adhan, Chapter: The Virtue of the Adhan, Hadith: 608
The hadith is authentic and is mentioned in all books of hadith. The disbelievers of hadith from the time of the rise of Islam object to and mock this hadith because they do not believe in the personal identity of Satan. They consider him to be the inner rebellious forces of man. When a person denies the very existence of Satan, how can he imagine that Satan releases a foul wind and comes and goes?
It is established from the Holy Quran that Satan has a personal identity, he has offspring and a tribe, and other actions and attributes are also proven. It is stated:
خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِن طِينٍ
"You created me from fire, and You created him from clay."
Reference: (7-Al-A'raf:12)
This verse, by describing the different substances of creation for Satan and man, proves the personal identity of Satan. Further it is stated:
كَانَ مِنَ الْجِنِّ فَفَسَقَ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِ ۚ أَفَتَتَّخِذُونَهُ وَذُرِّيَّتَهُ أَوْلِيَاءَ مِن دُونِي وَهُمْ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ
"He was one of the jinn, so he disobeyed the command of his Lord. Do you then take him and his offspring as allies instead of Me, while they are enemies to you?"
Reference: (18-Al-Kahf:50)
This verse explains the lineage of Satan that he was from among the jinn, and it also proves that he has offspring.
Further it is said:
قَالَ فَاخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ ﴿٣٤﴾ وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ اللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ ﴿٣٥﴾
"[Allah] said: 'Get out from here, for you are rejected, and cursed until the Day of Recompense.'"
Reference: (15-Al-Hijr:34-35)
These verses narrate the story of Adam, peace be upon him, and Iblis (Satan), that Satan refused to prostrate to Adam, so Allah declared him rejected and cursed him, proving that Iblis has a personal identity. Further it is stated:
إِنَّهُ يَرَاكُمْ هُوَ وَقَبِيلُهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا تَرَوْنَهُمْ
"Indeed, he (Iblis) and his tribe watch you from where you do not see them."
Reference: (7-Al-A'raf:27)
This verse mentions the condition, existence, and tribe of Satan. The nature of his personal existence is that you cannot see them, while they see you, which is proof of their being jinn, and there is explicit evidence for the existence of jinn as well. The deniers of hadith who claim that the jinn mean mountain people are explicitly contradicted by this noble verse. When the personal identity of Satan is clearly established from the Holy Quran, then his eating and drinking, deceiving, whispering, being intimidated by religious invitation, and releasing foul wind out of fear is not beyond reason. The denial of hadith and the unreasonable interpretations of the story of Adam and Iblis and the explicit verses about Iblis, following Sir Syed Ahmed, are not acceptable to any rational person.
