Who Was the First Ancestor of the Jinn? A Fatwa on Their Creation

❖ Question:

Who is the ancestor or grandfather of the jinn? Are they descendants of someone specific, just as humans are from Ādam (علیہ السلام)?

❖ Answer:

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!

The identity of the first ancestor (جد امجد) of the jinn, similar to how humans trace back to Ādam (علیہ السلام), is a question that arises out of curiosity. However, the Sharʿī sources — Qur’ān and Sunnah — provide limited information on this topic.

✦ ❶ The Lineage of Humans Is Clear:

It is well-established that:

“Hazrat Ādam (علیہ السلام) is the father of all humans.”
As such, we know our direct origin and genealogy.

✦ ❷ The Lineage of Jinn Is Unclear:

As for the jinn:

No clear or authentic narration — not even a weak one — has been identified that names the first jinn or grandfather of the jinn.

✦ ❸ Qur’ānic Reference – Surah al-Raḥmān:

"وَخَلَقَ الْجَانَّ مِنْ مَارِجٍ مِّن نَّارٍ"
"And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire."
(Surah al-Raḥmān: 15)

📚 In explaining this verse, commentators offer three views:

"الجان" refers to Iblīs.
➤ i.e., Iblīs was among the first of the jinn created from fire.

"أبو الجن غير إبليس"
➤ It is said the father of the jinn is someone other than Iblīs.

"نفس الجن"
➤ "Al-Jān" refers to the entire species of jinn, not a specific individual.

📚 al-Jammal, Ḥāshiyyah Tafsīr al-Jalālayn, Vol. 4, Pg. 298 (India Print)

✦ ❹ Conclusion from Exegetes:

✔ The most supported interpretation is that "al-Jān" refers to the species of jinn, not to one particular ancestral figure.
Iblīs, though among the jinn, may or may not be their original ancestor.

⤷ Therefore, the question “Who is the grandfather of the jinn?” has no explicit answer in Qur’ān or Ḥadīth.

✦ ❺ Final Verdict:

◈ There is no definitive Sharʿī evidence identifying the first jinn by name.
◈ The Qur’ān merely tells us that jinn were created from fire, and Iblīs was from the jinn.
◈ Some scholars suggest Iblīs may have been the first, while others maintain another unknown being might be the actual Abu al-Jinn.

✅ The safest and most correct response is:

“Allāh knows best.”

ھذا ما عندي، والله أعلم بالصواب
