Where to Don Ihrām for ʿUmrah While Living in Makkah?

❀ Ruling on Donning Ihrām for ʿUmrah While Residing in Makkah ❀

❖ Question:

A person residing in Makkah due to work arrangements by a company in Saudi Arabia intends to perform ʿUmrah. From where should he don the ihrām?

❖ Answer by:

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakeel Nāṣir (ḥafiẓahullāh)
Scholar: Ikrāmullāh Wāḥidī (ḥafiẓahullāh)

Once a person has taken up residence in Makkah and intends to perform ʿUmrah, according to the scholars of that region, he should go to a place “aqrab ilā al-ḥill” – that is, a location outside the boundaries of the Ḥaram.

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakeel Nāṣir (ḥafiẓahullāh) states that it is preferable for the person to travel to the Mīqāt, likely in the direction of Ṭā’if, as this method is based on greater precaution.

Some scholars are of the view that the case of Masjid ʿĀʾishah (Taneem) was specific to Sayyidah ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها), and therefore, it is not appropriate to generalize it as a standard practice for everyone.

Further Clarification:

Shaykh Ikrāmullāh Wāḥidī (ḥafiẓahullāh) mentions that if a person has come to Makkah for work and, upon completion of his work, wishes to perform ʿUmrah, then he may don the ihrām from wherever he currently is.

✔ However, going to the Mīqāt and donning ihrām is more virtuous, as it allows a person to avoid any doubts and juristic differences of opinion.
