What to Say When Afflicted with a Trial

Compiled by: Dr. Rizā Abdullah Pāshā (May Allah Protect Him)

Answer:

It has been narrated from Umm Salamah (RA) that she heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) say:

« ما من عبد تصيبه مصيبة، فيقول: إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون اللهم أجرني فى مصيبتي، وأخف لي خيرا منها. إلا أجره الله فى مصيبة، وأخلف له خيرا منها »

"Whenever a servant is struck with a calamity and says: 'Indeed, we belong to Allah and indeed to Him is our return. O Allah! Reward me in my calamity and replace it with something better than it,' then Allah will reward him in his calamity and replace it with something better."
(Sahih Muslim, Book of Funerals, Chapter on What to Say in a Calamity, Hadith No. 918, Musnad Ahmad 27/4)
