What to do if death occurs before making up missed fasts?

Question:.

A woman missed some fasts during Ramadan due to a valid Shari excuse, but she passed away before making them up. Will she have any sin remaining, and what will be the expiation for that sin?

Fatwa:.

If a person missed fasts due to illness, and that illness continued until their death after Ramadan, then their heirs will not be required to make up those fasts or provide expiation, because the deceased did not have the opportunity to make them up. However, if the person recovered and some days passed during which it was possible for them to fast, but they became negligent, then the missed fasts will be the responsibility of their heirs to make up, and the expiation for those fasts is to feed one poor person for each day.
