What Invalidates Salah and When Is It Excused?

❖ When Salah Becomes Invalid and When It Is Waived ❖

✦ Speaking During Salah — A Clear Cause of Invalidity

➊ Hadith of Hazrat Zayd ibn Arqam (رضي الله عنه):

“We used to speak during prayer in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ…”
But when the verse ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ... وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ﴾ was revealed,
“…we were commanded to remain silent and forbidden from speaking during prayer.”

📚 [Bukhārī: 1200; Muslim: 539; Abū Dāwūd: 949; Tirmidhī: 405; Nasā’ī: 3/18; Aḥmad: 4/368]

Hadith of Hazrat Ibn Mas‘ūd (رضي الله عنه):

“We used to greet the Prophet ﷺ during prayer and he would respond. Later, he stopped and said:
إن في الصلاة لشغلاً
‘Indeed, there is an engagement in prayer (that prohibits such speech).’

📚 [Bukhārī: 1199; Muslim: 538; Aḥmad: 1/377; Abū Dāwūd: 924; Nasā’ī: 3/19; Bayhaqī: 2/248]

➌ Additional Narrations Emphasizing Silence:

  • “When you are in prayer, be obedient and do not speak.”
    📚 [Musnad Abī Ya‘lā: 8/384]
  • “Allah has now decreed: Do not speak during Salah.”
    📚 [Ḥasan: Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd: 817; Abū Dāwūd: 924; Nasā’ī: 3/19]

✔ All of these narrations affirm that speaking during Salah is harām, and according to the agreed-upon legal principle:

النهي يقتضي فساد المنهي عنه
“Prohibition implies invalidity of the prohibited act.”

📚 [Irshād al-Fuḥūl: 2/370; al-Iḥkām by al-Āmidī: 3/269]

✦ Scholarly Consensus and Commentary

✔ According to Ibn Ḥajar and Shawkānī, there is ijmā‘ (consensus) among scholars that:

Deliberate speech during Salah (not intended for prayer correction) invalidates it.

📚 [Fatḥ al-Bārī: 3/90; Nayl al-Awṭār: 2/158]
📚 Also supported by: ʿAllāmah ʿAynī and Ibn al-Mundhir [ʿUmdat al-Qārī: 6/298–299; al-Awsaṭ: 3/234]

✦ Disagreement on Speech by Mistake or Ignorance

Imam Abū Ḥanīfah (رحمه الله) and Kufan scholars:

Speech — whether intentional, mistaken, or due to ignorance — invalidates Salah.

✔ Supported by:
Imam Sufyān al-Thawrī, Ibn al-Mubārak, Ḥammād ibn Abī Sulaymān, al-Naḫaʿī

Jumhūr (Majority of Scholars):

Imam Aḥmad, Imam al-Shāfiʿī, Imam Mālik, and others maintain:

Mistaken or ignorant speech does not invalidate Salah.

✔ This view is also transmitted from:
Hazrat Ibn Masʿūd, Ibn al-Zubayr, ʿUrwah, ʿAṭā’, Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, Qatādah

📚 [al-Awsaṭ: 3/236; Nayl al-Awṭār: 2/158; Sharḥ Muslim: 3/27; al-Umm: 1/236; Sharḥ al-Muhadhdhab: 4/169; al-Mabsūṭ: 1/170; al-Hidāyah: 1/61; Sabil al-Salām: 1/319; al-Mughnī: 2/444]

Rājiḥ (Stronger) Opinion: The view of the majority is more correct.

◉ Ibn Ḥazm (رحمه الله):

Mistaken/ignorant speech does not invalidate the prayer, but requires sujūd al-sahw.

📚 [al-Muḥallā: 2/314]

◉ Shawkānī (رحمه الله):

Speech out of forgetfulness or its equivalents does not break the prayer.

📚 [al-Sayl al-Jarrār: 1/234]

✦ Supporting Evidences

➊ Ḥadīth of Dhū al-Yadayn:

The Prophet ﷺ offered only two rak‘āt out of forgetfulness. When reminded, he asked:

"أصدق ذو اليدين؟"
“Is Dhū al-Yadayn speaking the truth?”

Then he completed the remaining rak‘āt and performed sujūd al-sahw, not the entire prayer again.

📚 [Bukhārī: 1214; Muslim: 573; Muwaṭṭa: 1/93; Tirmidhī: 399; Abū Dāwūd: 1008; Ibn Mājah: 1214]

✔ Proof that speech out of forgetfulness does not invalidate Salah.

➋ Hadith:

"إن الله تجاوز عن أمتي الخطأ والنسيان..."
“Indeed Allah has pardoned my ummah for errors and forgetfulness...”

📚 [Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Mājah: 1662; Irwā’ al-Ghalīl: 82]

➌ Hadith of Muʿāwiyah ibn Ḥakam (رضي الله عنه):

While in prayer, he said: "يرحمك الله" to someone who sneezed, then said, "Woe to me!" in surprise.
The Prophet ﷺ did not scold him or order him to repeat the prayer. Instead, he kindly taught:

"إن هذه الصلاة لا يصلح فيها شيء من كلام الناس..."
“Indeed, this prayer is not fit for human speech — it is only for tasbīḥ, takbīr, and recitation of Qur’an.”

📚 [Muslim: 537; Abū Dāwūd: 931; Nasā’ī: 3/14; Dārimī: 1/353; Bayhaqī: 2/249]

Clear evidence that speech out of ignorance does not invalidate Salah.

✦ Speech Made to Correct the Imam

Majority of scholars (including the four Imams) say:

Corrective speech (except tasbīḥ) invalidates Salah.

However, Imam al-Awzāʿī and some Mālikis permitted it.

📚 [Tuḥfat al-Aḥwadhī: 2/455; ʿUmdat al-Qārī: 6/298]

✦ Non-Related Actions That Invalidate Salah

✔ If a person engages in acts entirely unrelated to prayer, such as:

  • Lying down and sleeping
  • Running
  • Sewing clothes
  • Gazing for extended periods
  • Lifting burdens
  • Eating or drinking

These actions clearly invalidate the Salah, as the person no longer resembles a “praying individual”.

📚 [Refer: al-Fiqh al-Islāmī wa Adillatuhu: 2/1031–1034]

✦ Final Summary by Imam Shawkānī

“Once Salah is validly initiated, it does not become invalid — unless a nullifying act occurs as defined by the Shari‘ah, such as breaking wudu, deliberate speech, or intentionally omitting a rukn.”

📚 [al-Sayl al-Jarrār: 1/235]

✦ Conclusion

Deliberate speech or non-related actions invalidate Salah.
Speech done mistakenly or due to ignorance does not invalidate it, based on sound hadith and the stronger position of the majority of scholars.
Sujūd al-sahw may be required in such cases, but the prayer remains valid.
