What Does “The White Thread of Dawn Becomes Distinct from the Black Thread” Mean?

❖ Question:
In light of the verse of Allah ﷻ:
"And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]."
(Surah al-Baqarah 2:187)
What is the ruling for a person who completes their suḥūr (pre-dawn meal) and drinks water at the time of Fajr adhān or even 15 minutes after it?

❖ Answer:
If the person is certain that the eating and drinking took place before the appearance of true dawn (ṣubḥ ṣādiq), then no qadā’ (make-up fast) is required.

However, if it becomes known that the eating and drinking occurred after the appearance of true dawn, then qadā’ is obligatory.

In case one is uncertain whether the eating occurred before or after true dawn, then qadā’ is not obligatory, because the original presumption is that the night remains. But a Muslim should always exercise caution in matters of fasting. Therefore, it is best to stop eating and drinking upon hearing the adhān.

However, if it is known that the adhān was given before the appearance of true dawn, then one may eat and drink during that time.
