Was Maytham al-Tammār a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ? Reality Explained

❖ The Reality of Maytham al-Tammār’s Status as a Companion (Ṣaḥābī) ❖
Question:

Was Maytham al-Tammār among the Companions (Ṣaḥābah) of the Prophet ﷺ?

Answer by:
Fadhīlat al-Shaykh Saʿīd Mujtabā Saʿīdī ḥafiẓahullāh
Fadhīlat al-Bāḥith Nuʿmān Khalīq ḥafiẓahullāh

❀ Maytham al-Tammār – Background Overview:

✔ His full name was Maytham ibn Yaḥyā al-Tammār.
✔ He was born in Nahrawān, Iraq.
✔ He was a slave of a woman from the Banū Asad tribe.
✔ After embracing Islam, he was purchased and freed by ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib رضي الله عنه.
✔ Post-emancipation, he spent extensive time with ʿAlī رضي الله عنه, becoming one of his close associates.

❀ Was Maytham al-Tammār a Companion (Ṣaḥābī)?

❌ There is no reliable evidence in authentic Sunni sources confirming that Maytham al-Tammār was a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ.
✔ Most of what is written about him being a "ṣaḥābī" originates from Shia sources, which are unreliable and non-authoritative in this regard.
✔ Even within Shia literature, he is not listed among the Ṣaḥābah, but rather as one of the close followers (aṣḥāb) of ʿAlī رضي الله عنه.

❖ Conclusion:

📌 Maytham al-Tammār was not a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ.
🔍 He is more accurately described as a devoted follower of ʿAlī رضي الله عنه, but not among the Ṣaḥābah by any authentic or verified standard.
