Is it proven to hold a walimah before the couple spends their first night together after the wedding?
[Hafiz Tariq Mujahid Yazmani]
Answer:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) spent the first night with one of his wives, then sent me to invite people to the walimah feast.
[Sahih Bukhari: 5170]
Imam Bayhaqi, by dedicating a chapter titled "The Time of Walimah" to this hadith, indicated that the walimah should be held after the couple has come together and spent their first night.
Another hadith shows that the Prophet (peace be upon him) spent three nights with his blessed wife Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) after their first night together, and Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) invited people to the walimah. See:
[Sahih Bukhari: 5159]
Therefore, the Sunnah is to hold the walimah after the bride's arrival and the first night together (within three days).
