Virtues of Applying Fragrance to the Deceased and the Shroud

Written by: ʿImrān Ayyūb Lāhorī

❖ It Is Recommended to Apply Fragrance to the Body and Shroud of the Deceased

Islam encourages honoring the deceased, and among the ways to do so is to apply fragrance (ṭīb) to the body and the shroud (kafan) before burial. This is a Sunnah practice, supported by clear authentic narrations.

❖ Ḥadīth of Jābir رضي الله عنه:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«إذا أجمرتم الميت فأجمروه ثلاثًا»
“When you apply incense (fragrance) to the deceased, do so three times.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ: Musnad Aḥmad 3/331, Abū Yaʿlā 2300, al-Ḥākim 1/355, al-Bazzār 813, al-Bayhaqī 3/405]
✔ Imām al-Nawawī رحمه الله graded the chain as authentic.
✔ Imām al-Ḥākim رحمه الله declared it ṣaḥīḥ according to the conditions of Muslim, and Imām al-Dhahabī رحمه الله agreed.
[al-Majmūʿ 5/155, Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid 3/29]

❖ Exception: The Deceased in the State of Iḥrām

The above command does not apply to a person who dies while in iḥrām (state of pilgrimage), due to the specific instruction from the Prophet ﷺ.

❖ Ḥadīth Regarding a Muḥrim (Pilgrim) Who Died

The Prophet ﷺ said regarding a person who died in iḥrām:

«ولا تطيبوه»“Do not perfume him.”
«ولا تحنطوه»“Do not apply ḥanūṭ (fragrant embalming paste) to him.”
«ولا تمسوه طيبًا»“Do not touch him with any fragrance.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1267 – Kitāb al-Janāʾiz: Bāb Kayfa Yukaffan al-Muḥrim, Muslim 1206, Abū Dāwūd 3238, al-Tirmidhī 951, al-Nasāʾī 5/144, Ibn Mājah 3084, al-Dāramī 2/50, Aḥmad 1/220, Dāraquṭnī 2/296, al-Bayhaqī 3/390]

❖ Reason for Prohibition:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«فإن الله يبعثه يوم القيامة ملبّيًا»
“Indeed, Allah will resurrect him on the Day of Judgment saying the Talbiyah.”

✔ Since the deceased is in a state of iḥrām, and applying fragrance is prohibited in that state, it remains prohibited even after death.

✔ Summary of Rulings:

✅ For the ordinary deceased, it is Sunnah to:

  • Apply fragrance to the body and shroud
  • Use incense (e.g., ʿūd) and apply it three times
  • Include camphor in the final wash

❌ For a deceased in iḥrām, fragrance must not be applied, in accordance with explicit Prophetic instruction.
