❖ The Virtue of Khushū‘ and Khudū‘ in Salah ❖
✍ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
Allah Almighty states:
(قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿١﴾ الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ ﴿٢﴾)
“Successful indeed are the believers – those who humble themselves in their prayer.”
[Al-Mu’minūn: 1–2]
In these blessed verses, true success is tied to khushū‘ and khudū‘ in Salah. Only those believers will attain success who perform their prayers with deep focus, humility, and submission.
Narrated from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه):
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Iḥsān is to worship Allah as if you see Him. And if you cannot achieve this state, then (know that) He sees you.”
[Bukhari: 50; Muslim: 9]
This noble ḥadīth describes the highest level of khushū‘ in prayer. When one imagines seeing Allah, or at least believes that Allah is watching him, awe, reverence, and humility naturally fill the heart. In such a state, the worshipper performs Salah with utmost sincerity, dignity, and respect.
✔ Avoids unnecessary movements
✔ Refrains from inappropriate behavior
✔ Prays with calmness, dignity, and tranquility
Narrated from ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit (رضي الله عنه):
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“Allah has made five prayers obligatory. Whoever performs them properly, with good wudu’, and prays them with khushū‘ and completes their rukū‘, then for him is a promise from Allah that He will forgive him. But whoever does not do this, then for him there is no promise from Allah — He may forgive him, or He may punish him.”
[Abū Dāwūd: 425; Bāb al-Muḥāfaẓah ʿala al-Ṣalawāt; Ibn Ḥibbān authenticated it]
This ḥadīth clearly teaches us:
➊ The five daily prayers are obligatory.
➋ They must be performed with proper wudu’.
➌ Khushū‘ and khudū‘ must be present.
➍ The rukū‘ must be completed properly.
If these conditions are met, Allah guarantees forgiveness.
But if these essential elements are lacking, there is no guarantee of forgiveness from Allah.
Salah is not merely a series of physical movements — its spiritual essence lies in humbly presenting oneself before Allah, with reverence, devotion, and submission. Without khushū‘ and khudū‘, the prayer becomes a mere outward ritual. According to the Qur’an and Sunnah, true success belongs only to those who perform their prayers with full attention, respect, and heartfelt sincerity.
