❀ Importance of Post-Jumuʿah Nawāfil
The voluntary prayers after Salat al-Jumuʿah hold a special significance and are among the emphasized Sunnah acts which the Prophet ﷺ himself practiced and encouraged others to perform.
✿ ① Four Rakʿahs After Jumuʿah
Ḥaḍrat Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
إذا صلى أحدكم الجمعة فليصل بعدها أربع ركعات
“When one of you has offered the Friday prayer, he should offer four rakʿahs after it.”
[Muslim: 881 | Abū Dāwūd: 1131 | Tirmidhī: 522 | Nasā’ī: 3/113 | Ibn Mājah: 1132 | Bayhaqī: 3/239 | Aḥmad: 2/249]
✿ ② Emphasis on the Number Four
A narration in Jāmiʿ Tirmidhī clarifies the intent:
من كان منكم مصليًا بعد الجمعة فليصل أربعًا
“Whoever among you performs prayer after Jumuʿah, let him offer four (rakʿahs).”
[Ṣaḥīḥ Tirmidhī: 432 | Tirmidhī: 523]
This clearly indicates the recommended number to be four rakʿahs, which are ideally prayed in the masjid.
✿ ③ Two Rakʿahs in the Home
Ḥaḍrat Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) reported:
أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يصلي بعد الجمعة ركعتين في بيته
“The Prophet ﷺ used to pray two rakʿahs in his house after the Friday prayer.”
[Bukhārī: 937, 1165 | Muslim: 882 | Abū Dāwūd: 1128 | Tirmidhī: 521 | Nasā’ī: 3/113 | Ibn Mājah: 1130 | Aḥmad: 2/103]
❖ Summary of the Practice
✔ Four rakʿahs after Jumuʿah are afḍal (preferable) and in line with the direct command of the Prophet ﷺ.
✔ However, two rakʿahs are also permissible, especially if prayed at home, as done by the Prophet ﷺ.
✔ Scholars have reconciled both practices by suggesting:
➤ Praying four in the masjid,
➤ Or praying two in the masjid and two at home,
➤ Or just two at home if one departs immediately.
