◈ Ruling on Using a Tape-Recorded Adhan for Prayer Times ◈

Question:
Is it permissible in Islamic law to use a tape-recorded Adhan (call to prayer) during the times of Salah?
Using a tape-recorded Adhan during prayer times is religiously impermissible and an innovation (Bid'ah). There are multiple reasons for the prohibition and classification of this act as an innovation:
The Adhan is composed of a specific form and method, which includes the following essential practices:
✔ Standing of the Mu’adhin:
It is obligatory for the Mu’adhin (caller to prayer) to give the Adhan while standing, as stated in the Hadith:
“قم مع بلال”
"Stand with Bilal."
(‘Awn al-Ma‘bud, Vol. 1, p. 188)
✔ Facing the Qiblah:
Facing the Qiblah while delivering the Adhan is Sunnah, as mentioned in the Hadith:
“فاستقبل القبلة وقال اللہ اکبر”
"Then he turned to the Qiblah and said: Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)."
(Al-Hidayah, Vol. 1, p. 88)
✔ Placing Fingers in the Ears:
This too is Sunnah, as the Hadith states:
“كان بلال يؤذن ويدور ويدع فاه إلى ههنا وههنا وأصبعيه في أذنيه”
"Bilal (RA) used to give the Adhan while turning and moving his mouth this way and that, with his fingers in his ears."
(Tuhfat al-Ahwazi, Vol. 1, p. 176)
✔ Turning the Face Right and Left:
Turning the face right and left while saying "Hayya ‘ala al-Salah" and "Hayya ‘ala al-Falah" is a Sunnah.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Vol. 1, p. 88)
✖ All these Sunnah practices are absent in a tape-recorded Adhan. Therefore, such a recording cannot be regarded as a valid Shari‘ah-compliant Adhan.
Adhan is among the prominent symbols of Islam, as illustrated in the Hadith:
“كان رسول الله ﷺ يغير إذا طلع الفجر، فإن سمع أذان أمسك، وإلا أغار”
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would launch an attack at dawn. If he heard the Adhan, he would refrain; otherwise, he would attack."
(Sahih Muslim, Vol. 1, p. 144)
✔ It is obligatory to preserve Islamic symbols in their original and prescribed form. Any alteration to them is impermissible.
The Adhan in itself is a form of worship. For any worship to be accepted, sincerity (Ikhlas) and adherence to the Sunnah are necessary.
✖ A tape recorder is an inanimate object lacking sincerity, and it cannot follow the prescribed Sunnah method. Thus, the act of Adhan cannot be fulfilled by it.
If the tape-recorded Adhan is considered valid, it would render all the Hadiths concerning the virtues of the Mu’adhin meaningless, since a tape recorder cannot be classified as a Mu’adhin.
Using a recorded Adhan could be a subtle effort to weaken Islamic symbols and alienate the public from the true scholars of Islam. It is an attempt to strip Islam of its spiritual essence.
Using a tape-recorded Adhan during prayer times is categorically impermissible, against the Sunnah, and a reprehensible innovation (Bid‘ah Sayyi’ah).
It not only contravenes the principles of Islamic law but also threatens to erode the integrity of Islamic rituals. Scholars and the general public must avoid this practice and remain vigilant of its harms.

❖ The Ruling:
Using a tape-recorded Adhan during prayer times is religiously impermissible and an innovation (Bid'ah). There are multiple reasons for the prohibition and classification of this act as an innovation:
✿ Reasons for Prohibition:
① Contradiction to the Prescribed Manner (Sunnah) of Adhan:
The Adhan is composed of a specific form and method, which includes the following essential practices:
✔ Standing of the Mu’adhin:
It is obligatory for the Mu’adhin (caller to prayer) to give the Adhan while standing, as stated in the Hadith:

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Vol. 1, p. 88)
✖ All these Sunnah practices are absent in a tape-recorded Adhan. Therefore, such a recording cannot be regarded as a valid Shari‘ah-compliant Adhan.
② Adhan is a Distinctive Symbol of Islam (Sha‘a’ir al-Islam):
③ Adhan is an Act of Worship:
The Adhan in itself is a form of worship. For any worship to be accepted, sincerity (Ikhlas) and adherence to the Sunnah are necessary.
✖ A tape recorder is an inanimate object lacking sincerity, and it cannot follow the prescribed Sunnah method. Thus, the act of Adhan cannot be fulfilled by it.
④ Negation of Hadith Rewards for the Mu’adhin:
If the tape-recorded Adhan is considered valid, it would render all the Hadiths concerning the virtues of the Mu’adhin meaningless, since a tape recorder cannot be classified as a Mu’adhin.
⑤ A Conspiracy to Undermine Islamic Symbols:
Using a recorded Adhan could be a subtle effort to weaken Islamic symbols and alienate the public from the true scholars of Islam. It is an attempt to strip Islam of its spiritual essence.
❖ Conclusion:
Using a tape-recorded Adhan during prayer times is categorically impermissible, against the Sunnah, and a reprehensible innovation (Bid‘ah Sayyi’ah).
It not only contravenes the principles of Islamic law but also threatens to erode the integrity of Islamic rituals. Scholars and the general public must avoid this practice and remain vigilant of its harms.
