① Hadith of Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه
❀ Arabic:
لو يعلم الناس ما في النداء والصف الأول، ثم لم يجدوا إلا أن يستهموا عليه؛ لاستهموا، ولو يعلمون ما في التهجير؛ لاستبقوا إليه، ولو يعلمون ما في العتمة والصبح؛ لأتوهما ولو حبوا.
Translation:
"If people knew the reward in the call to prayer and the first row, and they could not get it except by drawing lots, they would draw lots. If they knew the reward for coming early to the prayer, they would race for it. And if they knew the reward for the night (ʿIshāʾ) and dawn (Fajr) prayers, they would attend them even if they had to crawl."
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 615; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 437② Another Hadith of Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه
❀ Arabic:
خير صفوف الرجال أولها، وشرها آخرها، وخير صفوف النساء آخرها، وشرها أولها.
Translation:
"The best rows for men are the first, and the worst are the last. And the best rows for women are the last, and the worst are the first."
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 440③ Hadith of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī رضي الله عنه
❀ Arabic:
إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم رأى في أصحابه تأخرا، فقال لهم: «تقدموا، فأنموا بي، وليأتم بكم من بعدكم، لا يزال قوم يتأخرون حتى يوجرهم الله يتأخرون حتى».
Translation:
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw that some companions were holding back in the rows. He said: 'Move forward and follow me, and let those behind follow you. A people will continue to delay until Allah keeps them behind (from His mercy).'"
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 438④ Hadith of Ubayy ibn Kaʿb رضي الله عنه
❀ Arabic:
صلى بنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يوما الصبح، فقال أشاهد فلان؟ قالوا: لا، قال: أشاهد فلان؟ قالوا: لا. قال: إن هاتين الصلاتين أثقل الصلوات على المنافقين، ولو تعلمون ما فيهما لأتيتموهما ولو حبوا على الركب، وإن الصف الأول على مثل صف الملائكة، ولو علمتم ما فضيلته؛ لابتدرتموه، وإن صلاة الرجل مع الرجل أزكى من صلاته وحده، وصلاته مع الرجلين أوكى من صلاته مع الرجل، وما كثر؛ فهو أحب إلى الله تعالى.
Translation:
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once led us in Fajr prayer and asked, 'Is so-and-so present?' They replied, 'No.' He asked again, 'Is so-and-so present?' They replied, 'No.' He said: 'These two prayers (ʿIshāʾ and Fajr) are the heaviest upon the hypocrites. If you knew the reward in them, you would attend even if crawling on your knees. The first row is like the row of angels. If you knew its virtue, you would race for it. The prayer of a man with another is purer than his alone, and his prayer with two is better than with one, and the more the number, the more beloved it is to Allah.'"

❀ Arabic:
شبه الصف الأول في قربه من الإمام بصف الملائكة المقربين في قربهم إلى الله عز وجل.
Translation:
"The first row is likened to the rows of the closest angels due to its closeness to the Imām, just as they are closest to Allah."
Sharḥ al-Mishkāh: 4/1132❖ Encouragement to Join the First Row
Being in the first row draws one closer to Allah, just as an obedient student sits close to his teacher and benefits immensely. In the same way, being close to Allah’s mercy and His angels brings immense peace and detachment from worldly concerns. So, take initiative and strive for the first row!
⑥ Hadith of al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib رضي الله عنه
❀ Arabic:
كنا إذا صلينا خلف رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم؛ أحببنا أن نكون عن يمينه، يقبل علينا بوجهه، قال: فسمعته يقول: رب قني عذابك يوم تبعث أو تجمع عبادك.
Translation:
"When we prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we used to love standing to his right side, and he would face us. I heard him say: 'O my Lord, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect or gather Your slaves.'"
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 709⑦ Hadith of ʿIrbaḍ ibn Sāriyah رضي الله عنه
❀ Arabic:
كان يصلي على الصف الأول ثلاثا، وعلى الثاني واحدة.
Translation:
"The Prophet ﷺ would make supplication three times for the first row and once for the second row."
Sunan al-Nasā’ī: 817; Musnad Aḥmad: 4/128 – sanad ḥasan Authenticated by Ibn Ḥibbān (2159).⑧ Repeat of Hadith of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī رضي الله عنه
❀ Arabic:
تقدموا، فأتموا بي، وليأتم بكم من بعدكم، لا يزال قوم يتأخرون حتى يؤخرهم الله.
Translation:
"Move forward, follow me, and let those behind follow you. A people will continue to fall behind until Allah pushes them further back (from mercy)."
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 438⚠ Important Clarification: Weak Narration
It is narrated from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās that:
❀ Arabic:
كانت امرأة تصلي خلف رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم حسناء... فإذا ركع نظر من تحت إبطيه.
Translation:
"A beautiful woman used to pray behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Some men would move to the front row to avoid seeing her, while others would remain in the back to glance at her from beneath their armpits during rukūʿ."
Sunan al-Nasā’ī: 870; al-Tirmidhī: 3122; Ibn Mājah: 1046
This narration is weak due to ʿAmr ibn Mālik al-Nakrī's transmission from Abū al-Jawzāʾ.Imām Ibn ʿAdī رحمه الله said:
❝He reported around ten narrations from Abū al-Jawzāʾ which are not preserved.❞
Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb: 1/336Ibn Kathīr رحمه الله stated:
❝This narration is extremely objectionable.❞
Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr: 4/532⚠ Another Clarification: Weakness Due to Tadlīs
Sayyidah ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها narrated:
❀ Arabic:
إن الله وملائكته يصلون على ميامن الصفوف.
Translation:
"Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the right sides of the rows."
Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 675; Ibn Mājah: 1005 This narration is weak due to Sufyān al-Thawrī’s tadlīs (concealed transmission).
Imām al-Bayhaqī declared it unpreserved (غير محفوظ). al-Sunan al-Kubrā: 3/103 Conclusion
✔ The first row in prayer holds exceptional reward and is likened to the rows of angels.
✔ Being in front draws one closer to Allah’s mercy and guidance.
✔ The Prophet ﷺ emphasized moving forward and discouraged remaining in the back.
✔ Weak narrations must be avoided and not used as proof.
✔ Let us make a conscious effort to join the first row and earn Allah’s immense blessings.
