History of the Three Blessed Generations: Truth of the Companions and Ahl al-Bayt
Sectarianism in the Early Centuries of Islam
During the era of the three blessed generations (Qurūn-e-Thalātha), sectarian elements fabricated misleading narrations that portrayed a distorted image of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and the Ahl al-Bayt. Even authentic narrations were altered during this time to divert Muslims from the true facts. This manipulation became more prominent after the middle of the third century Hijri, adversely impacting the character and biography of these noble personalities. Contrary to the Qur'an and Hadith, these personalities were depicted in a manner inconsistent with their true nature.
Both the Qur'an and the Hadith testify to the integrity, trustworthiness, and mutual love among the noble Companions and the Ahl al-Bayt of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Upon careful research of historical sources, there is no evidence to support the claim that ʿAlī رضي الله عنه was displeased or angry with any of the Companions—as is sometimes falsely attributed. Rather, historical facts indicate the opposite.
① Marital Bond with ʿUmar رضي الله عنه: ʿAlī رضي الله عنه gave his daughter, Sayyidah Umm Kulthūm رضي الله عنها, in marriage to ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه.

② Marital Bond with Abū Bakr رضي الله عنه: ʿAlī رضي الله عنه married Asmā’ bint ʿUmays رضي الله عنها, the widow of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq رضي الله عنه. Through this marriage, Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr رضي الله عنه became the stepson of ʿAlī رضي الله عنه.

③ Names of His Children as a Sign of Affection: ʿAlī رضي الله عنه named his sons “Abū Bakr”, “ʿUmar”, and “ʿUthmān” رضي الله عنهم.

④ Narrations from Ḥasan and Ḥusayn رضي الله عنهما:
– Ḥasan رضي الله عنه named one of his sons “Abū Bakr”.
– ʿAlī ibn Ḥusayn رضي الله عنهما named his son “ʿUmar”.
– Similarly, Mūsá ibn Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq named his son “ʿUmar” and his daughter “ʿĀ’ishah”.

⑤ Testimony of Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq رضي الله عنه:
Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq stated that he was born twice through Abū Bakr رضي الله عنه—his mother, Umm Farwah, was the daughter of Qāsim ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr, and his maternal grandmother was Asmā’ bint ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr.

These facts clearly demonstrate that ʿAlī رضي الله عنه and his progeny exhibited sincere love and unity with the preceding Companions. He accepted the position of judge during the caliphate of ʿUmar رضي الله عنه and praised the first two caliphs (al-Shaykhayn). He neither rebelled against them nor nullified their rulings; rather, he established marital ties with their families.
① First Group: These individuals attempt to downplay the virtues of the Companions of the Messenger ﷺ and deny the merits of the Ahl al-Bayt.
② Second Group: This group exaggerates the virtues of the Ahl al-Bayt while ignoring the greatness of the Companions.
✔ Equal love should be maintained for all the noble Companions رضي الله عنهم, and their righteousness should be honored.
✔ Their mistakes should not be met with insults, as per the instruction of the Prophet ﷺ.
✔ Love should be maintained for the Ahl al-Bayt, but without exaggeration, and they should be honored in the status granted to them by Allah alone.
The Ahl al-Bayt and the Companions are members of the same sacred community, who played an unparalleled role in preserving and spreading the religion of Islam. Their knowledge and practice were so pure and elevated that no one can equal them until the Day of Judgment. These are the individuals through whom Allah granted honor and prominence to His religion.
