Understanding “إياكم وخضراء الدمن” — Meaning and Authenticity

◈ The Question

What is the meaning of the statement "إياكم وخضراء الدمن"?

The Scholarly Response

Before delving into the explanation, it must be clearly stated that this narration is extremely weak (da‘if jiddan) — in fact, it is considered fabricated (mawḍū‘). Therefore, it holds no status in the authentication of hadith and should not be attributed to the Prophet ﷺ.

Nonetheless, its linguistic meaning can be explained for academic benefit.

Linguistic Explanation

The word "الدمن" refers to dung or manure piles — areas where animal feces accumulate. Due to the moisture and richness of such places, green plants may sprout, appearing lush and attractive on the outside.

Hence, the expression "خضراء الدمن" metaphorically refers to:
“A beautiful woman raised in a corrupt or unworthy environment.”

It serves as a figurative warning"Beware of the greenery of filth", i.e., do not be deceived by outer beauty if it is nurtured in morally corrupt surroundings.

◈ Conclusion by the Scholars

Shaykh Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani (رحمه الله) emphasized that this narration is not a part of the Prophet’s ﷺ authentic sayings, and it should not be circulated as a hadith. It only holds value as a metaphorical or linguistic expression, not as religious evidence.
