Question
How many types of waḥy (revelation) are there?
Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa as-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ammā ba‘d!
Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’an:
{وَمَا كَانَ لِبَشَرٍ أَنْ یُّكَلِّمَهُ اﷲُ إِلاَّ وَحْیًا أَوْ مِنْ وَّرَآئِ یْ حِجَابٍ أَوْ یُرْسِلَ رَسُولاً فَیُوحِیَ بِإِذْنِهِ مَا یَشَآءُ}
“It is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation, or from behind a veil, or that He sends a messenger who reveals by His permission whatever He wills.”
— [Al-Shūrā 51, P25]
All the forms of revelation mentioned in the Qur’an and Sunnah ultimately return to these three categories described in this noble verse.
