Travel Distance for Shortening Prayers and Duration of Qasr Prayers

Question:

If one sets out on a journey of twelve miles, can they perform Qasr (shortened) prayers? Additionally, if one intends to stay at a place for more than four days, should they perform full prayers or Qasr? (Inquirer)

Answer:

❀ It is mentioned in Sahih Muslim:

عن يحيي بن يزيد الهنائي قال : سألت أنس بن مالك عن قصر الصلوٰة ؟ فقال : كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا خرج مسيرة ثلاثة أميال أو ثلاثة فراسخ . شعبة الشاك . صلّى ركعتين

Yahya bin Yazid al-Hana’i narrated that he asked Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) about shortening the prayer. Anas replied: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would shorten the prayer to two Rak'ahs if he traveled a distance of three miles or three Farsakhs (nine miles). Shuba had a doubt whether it was three miles or three Farsakhs." [Hadith 691]

Note:

To remove any doubt, the nine miles should be adopted, which is generally equivalent to eleven miles. Thus, it is established that it is permissible to perform Qasr for a journey of at least eleven miles.

If a person intends to stay for more than four days, they should still perform Qasr prayers. However, according to the narration of Ibn Abbas, if the intention is to stay for twenty days or more, then full prayers should be performed.

❀ It is mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari:

عن ابن عباس قال : أقام النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم تسعة عشر يقصر فنحن إذا سا فرنا تسعة عشر قصرنا و إن زدنا أتممنا

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) stayed at a place for nineteen days, during which he performed Qasr prayers. Ibn Abbas said: "We would perform Qasr if we traveled for nineteen days, and if we stayed for more than that, we would perform full prayers." [Hadith 1080]

Note:

There is no explicit evidence for three or four days in comparison to this.
