Do you know what tone truly means?
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had two neighbors: Abu Lahab and Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it. It was Abu Lahab’s daily routine to throw garbage into the Prophet’s ﷺ house every morning.
Yet, the Prophet ﷺ would always step out of his home with a smile and would merely say:
"Uncle! O Banu Abd Manaf, you tell me — what kind of neighborliness is this?"
This was the noble tone of the Prophet ﷺ — marked by gentleness and dignity, even in the face of repeated humiliation.
One day, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in prostration, Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it came and tied a cloth around his blessed neck, tightening it so much that it caused him immense pain.
Abu Bakr Siddiq ؓ rushed in, pushed Uqbah away, and in the process, his beard was pulled so harshly that hair came out from the roots and his head was injured.
Yet, Abu Bakr ؓ simply said:
"Do you intend to kill a man because he says: My Lord is Allah?"
(Al-Qur'an 40:28)
This was the embodiment of patience — enduring injustice without retaliation.
At the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Prophet ﷺ proclaimed:
"All forms of vengeance from the time of ignorance are abolished beneath my feet today. The first blood I declare void is that of Rabiah ibn Harith — the son of my uncle Abdul Muttalib."
(Rabiah ibn Harith’s son had been killed by the Banu Hudhayl.)
This was the Prophet’s ﷺ grace — setting aside personal grievances and exemplifying justice despite having the power for retaliation.
In the streets of Ta’if, the blessed body of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was drenched in blood, his eyes were tearful, and his face bore the marks of suffering. He continued looking up to the sky, while Zaid ibn Harithah stood silently beside him.
Do you know what the Prophet ﷺ was saying at that moment?
"O Most Merciful! I complain to You of my weakness, lack of means, and the contempt of people. If You are not angry with me, then I do not care for any hardship."
This is the ultimate expression of helplessness — turning solely to Allah in the face of extreme pain and rejection.
◈ Tone: Kindness and respect
◈ Patience: Enduring oppression with perseverance
◈ Grace: Upholding justice even when empowered
◈ Helplessness: Seeking refuge only in Allah
Such is the luminous character of the final Messenger ﷺ, an eternal example for all of humanity.
