It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abi bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: "O Abu Munzir! Do you know which is the greatest verse of the Book of Allah that you have (i.e., that is preserved in your chest)?" I said, الله لا إله إلا هو الحي القيوم Then he placed his hand on my chest and said, "O Abu Munzir! May you be blessed with knowledge," meaning that by the blessing of this knowledge, you have come to know the greatest verse of the Quran."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) entrusted me with the protection of the Zakat of Ramadan (i.e., Sadaqah al-Fitr). Then a man came to me and began to take handfuls from the grain. So I caught him and said, "I will surely present you before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." He said, "I am needy and have dependents; I am in great need." So I let him go. Then I came in the morning (and presented myself before the Messenger of Allah). He said, "O Abu Hurairah! What did your prisoner do last night?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah! He complained of his need and dependents, so I had mercy on him and let him go." He said, "He lied to you, and he will come again." So I became certain because of the Messenger of Allah's statement that he would come again. So I waited for him. Then he came and began to take handfuls from the grain. I said, "I will surely take you to the Messenger of Allah." He said, "Let me go; I am needy and have dependents, and I will not come again." I felt pity for him and let him go. Then I came in the morning (and presented myself before him). The Messenger of Allah said to me, "O Abu Hurairah! What did your prisoner do last night?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah! He complained of need and dependents, so I had pity on him and let him go." He said, "He lied to you, and he will come again." So I waited for him a third time. Then he came and began to take handfuls from the grain. I caught him and said, "I will surely present you before the Messenger of Allah. This is your third time coming, and each time you say you will not come again, yet you come." He said, "Let me go; I will teach you a few words by which Allah will benefit you." I said, "What are those words?" He said, "When you lie down on your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi. Because of it, a guardian will be appointed over you by Allah until morning, and Satan will not come near you." So I let him go again. Then when I came in the morning, the Messenger of Allah said to me, "What did your prisoner do last night?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah! He assured me that he would teach me words by which Allah would benefit me, so I let him go." He asked, "What are those words?" I said, "He told me that when I lie down on my bed, I should recite Ayat al-Kursi from beginning to end. And he also said that a guardian from Allah would remain over me, and Satan would not come near me until morning." The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said, "Be aware! Indeed, he spoke the truth, although he himself is a great liar. O Abu Hurairah! Do you know with whom you have been conversing for three nights?" I said, "No." He said, "He was Satan."
