The Virtue of ʿAlī رضي الله عنه and the Status of Other Companions

Based on the Work of Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Ameenpuri (حفظه الله)
Organized for Clarity and Scholarly Precision

❖ The Virtue of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib رضي الله عنه

Narrated by al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib رضي الله عنه:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿAlī رضي الله عنه:
"You are from me, and I am from you."
📚 Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 4251

This hadith highlights the honorable status of ʿAlī رضي الله عنه, but this virtue is not exclusive to him.

❖ Other Companions with Similar Virtue

◈ Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī رضي الله عنه

The Prophet ﷺ said:
"When the Ashʿarīs ran out of food during campaigns or for their families, they would gather what they had and divide it equally among themselves. They are from me, and I am from them."
📚 Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 2486, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2500

◈ Julaybīb رضي الله عنه

He displayed remarkable bravery in battle, killing seven disbelievers before achieving martyrdom. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"He is from me, and I am from him."
📚 Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2472

◈ Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī رضي الله عنه

Narrated by Yaʿlā ibn Murrah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Ḥusayn is from me, and I am from him."
📚 Musnad Aḥmad: 4/172, Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 3775
Imām Ibn Ḥibbān and al-Ḥākim graded this ṣaḥīḥ, and al-Dhahabī confirmed its authenticity.

Another variation states:
"Ḥusayn is from me, and I am from Ḥusayn."

❖ Conclusion

The association of any Companion with the Prophet ﷺ using the phrase "He is from me, and I am from him" is indeed a great honor and virtue. However, it is not exclusive to ʿAlī رضي الله عنه. Others such as Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī, Julaybīb, and Ḥusayn رضي الله عنهم also share this honor.

🔖 Thus, using this phrase alone to assert the claim of immediate caliphate for ʿAlī رضي الله عنه is not justified based on the broader evidence of similar praises for other companions.
