The Qur'anic Verse Recited by the Prophet ﷺ During the Hijrah to Madinah
Answered by: al-ʿĀlim al-Faḍīl Muḥammad ʿUmar Atharī ḥafiẓahullāh

❖ Question:

Which Qur'anic verse was recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ at the time of Hijrah (migration) to Madinah?

Answer:

During the blessed journey of Hijrah to Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ recited the following verse from Surah at-Tawbah:

ثَانِيَ اثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِي الْغَارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَا
[Surah at-Tawbah: 40]

Translation:
“When he was one of the two, when they were in the cave, and he said to his companion: ‘Do not grieve; indeed, Allah is with us.’”

This verse refers to the historic and spiritually significant incident of the cave (Ghār Thawr), during which the Prophet ﷺ comforted Abu Bakr al-Ṣiddīq رضي الله عنه with these words. This moment signifies:

✔ Total reliance on Allah (tawakkul)
✔ The unique companionship of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه
✔ A reminder of divine protection and presence during hardship
