❖ Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the People of the Book
The nation of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was neither Jewish nor Christian. Yet, he engaged in reasoned and rational dialogue not only with the Jews but also with the Christians. If his prophethood had been limited—like the prophethoods before him that were restricted to specific nations—then such prolonged discussions and debates with Jews and Christians would have been unnecessary. Many intelligent individuals in Makkah, and later in Madinah, accepted his message. For them, the miracles they had witnessed were sufficient proofs.❖ The Purpose Behind Lengthy Dialogues
These extensive debates and discourses with Jews and Christians were meant to demonstrate—first to his own people and then to all of humanity—that the chain of prophethood culminated with Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. This served to establish that his prophethood was universal and final. If anyone claimed to still be upon the truth after the appearance of this final prophethood (and while we believe that Jews and Christians were indeed upon the truth in their original teachings), they were invited to come forth publicly so the message of truth could reach every rational being in the world.❖ Confidence of Prophet ʿĪsā (علیہ السلام) and Its Parallels in the Qur'an
By reading the New Testament of the Bible, one can observe the profound confidence of Prophet ʿĪsā (علیہ السلام) in his sermons when addressing the Jewish Pharisees. Truth speaks for itself, and the truth of prophethood is a radiant light that proclaims its reality from every angle. Those who have seen the confidence of ʿĪsā (علیہ السلام) in the New Testament should read Sūrah al-Baqarah and Sūrah Āl ʿImrān in the Qur’an. Sūrah al-Baqarah addresses the Jewish scholars, and Sūrah Āl ʿImrān addresses the Christian scholars. Moreover, the Hadith and Seerah literature contain rich accounts of debates between Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the leading scholars of the Jews and Christians. When one reflects upon these, it becomes evident how the truth manifests itself in the voice of the one who bears it.
