The Truthfulness of Ahl al-Hadith and the Baseless Criticism of Rizwan Aziz

Derived from: Monthly al-Hadith, Hazro

❖ Introduction

Respected readers! Hafiz Zubair Ali Zai حفظه الله had presented some examples to demonstrate the resemblance between the Qadianis (Mirzais) and the Masudi sect.

(Refer to al-Hadith Hazro, Issue 7, p. 42)

Following this, a Deobandi, Rizwan Aziz, wrote an article in the Qafila Batil—led by Ilyas Ghuman—attempting to establish similarities between the Ahl al-Hadith and these deviant groups.

(See Qafila Batil, Vol. 5, Issue 9)

He wrote:

“So that the general Muslims stay away from these deviant sects: the Qadianis, the Masudi, and the Ghair Muqallideen.”
(Qafila Batil, Vol. 5, Issue 18)

❖ Use of Abusive Language

This Deobandi used extremely derogatory language against the Ahl al-Hadith in his writings. For example:

➊ “Afghan Fugitive”
(Qafila Batil, Vol. 4, Issue 15; Vol. 5, Issue 9)
➋ “Why are you licking back what you spat out?”
(Vol. 4, Issue 17)
➌ “Fugitives”
(Vol. 4, Issue 17)
➍ “Their filthy existence”
(Vol. 4, Issue 39)
➎ “These tricksters are performing a new drama”
(Vol. 4, Issue 40)
➏ “Hired agents”
(Same issue)
➐ “Croaking like monsoon frogs”
(Same issue)
➑ “Non-muqallid Zamburi Tamburi”
(Vol. 5, Issue 10)
➒ “Miraasi”
(Vol. 5, Issue 13)
➓ “Abdullah the Mad of Puri”
(Vol. 5, Issue 12)
⓫ “Your guru, the cunning Abdullah Bahawalpuri”
(Vol. 5, Issue 16)
⓬ “Your company is complete after being beaten with shoes”
(Vol. 5, Issue 17)

❖ Response from the Deobandi Perspective

Rizwan Aziz’s behavior is in stark contrast to what the famous Deobandi debater Muhammad Manzoor Nomani said:

“The Prophet ﷺ stated one sign of a hypocrite is that when he quarrels, he uses abusive language. May Allah protect every Muslim from this hypocritical habit.”
(Futuhat Nomaniyyah, p. 858)

✿ Evidences of Ahl al-Hadith’s Authenticity and Rizwan Aziz’s Folly

Mufti Kifayatullah Dehlavi (Deobandi “Grand Mufti of India”) wrote:
“Yes, the Ahl al-Hadith are Muslims and are part of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jama‘ah. It is permissible to marry them. Merely leaving taqlid does not separate them from Islam or Ahl al-Sunnah.”
(Kifayat al-Mufti, Vol. 1, p. 325, Fatwa No. 370)

He also wrote:
“It is valid for a Hanafi to pray behind a non-muqallid (Ahl al-Hadith).”
(Kifayat al-Mufti, Vol. 1, p. 327, Fatwa No. 373)

Mufti Aziz al-Rahman Deobandi (First Mufti of Darul Uloom Deoband) wrote:
“A woman from Ahl al-Sunnah cannot marry someone from a sect that has been declared disbelievers (like Qadianis and Shias). But with those not declared disbelievers—like the Ghair Muqallid and Najdi—the marriage is valid.”
(Fatawa Dar al-Uloom Deoband, Vol. 8, p. 187, second edition p. 197)

Sheikh al-Tafsir, Imam al-Awliya Ahmad Ali Lahori Deobandi stated:
“I am Qadri and Hanafi. The Ahl al-Hadith are neither Qadri nor Hanafi, yet they have been praying in our mosque for 40 years, and I consider them upon the truth.”
(Malfoozat Tayyibat, p. 115; second edition p. 136)

Mufti Rashid Ahmad Ludhianvi Deobandi wrote:
“By the second or third century, five schools of thought emerged in resolving subsidiary issues: the four madhabs and the Ahl al-Hadith. Since then, these five have been considered the bearers of truth.”
(Ahsan al-Fatawa, Vol. 1, p. 316; also in “Maududi Sahib aur Takhrib-e-Islam,” p. 20)

Imam Sarfaraz Safdar Deobandi wrote about Ahl al-Hadith scholar Maulana Muhammad Husain Batalvi:
“Hazrat Shaykh al-Hind said: ‘No matter how harsh your language, we will never label you with disbelief or immorality. Rather, we affirm your Islam.’”
(Ahsan al-Kalam, Vol. 2, p. 155; second edition p. 169)

Abd al-Haqq Dehlavi (author of “Tafsir Haqqani”), a respected Deobandi scholar, wrote:
“The Ahl al-Sunnah are the Shafi‘i, Hanbali, Maliki, Hanafi, and also the Ahl al-Hadith.”
(Haqqani ‘Aqa’id al-Islam, p. 3; endorsed by Muhammad Qasim Nanotvi, founder of Darul Uloom Deoband, p. 264)

Deobandi writer Muhammad Ashraf in “Qafila Haqq” stated:
“The Ahl al-Hadith are our Muslim brothers.”
(Qafila Haqq, Vol. 5, Issue 41)

Amin Okara Deobandi’s father, Wali Muhammad, a devout Deobandi, said:
“Your prayers and our prayers are both accepted—no need to argue.”
(Tajalliyat Safdar, Vol. 1, p. 85)

Mufti Azam Pakistan, Muhammad Shafi‘ Deobandi’s fatwa allowed following the Ahl al-Hadith view on triple talaq:
(Monthly al-Shari‘ah, July 2010, Vol. 21, Issue 7, p. 14)

Mufti Taqi Usmani Deobandi acknowledged the renowned Ahl al-Hadith scholar Muhammad Isma‘il Salafi:
(Taqleed ki Shar‘i Haithiyyat, p. 146)

When asked if a Hanafi praying a funeral prayer behind an Ahl al-Hadith imam would be blameworthy, the Deobandi fatwa stated:
“It is not blameworthy; criticizing him is unwarranted.”
(Aziz al-Fatawa, Vol. 1, p. 328, Fatwa No. 528)

❖ Conclusion: Rizwan Aziz’s Folly

It is clear that Deobandi scholars have repeatedly affirmed that the Ahl al-Hadith are part of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jama‘ah and that their prayers and marriages are valid. If Rizwan Aziz’s logic equating Ahl al-Hadith with Qadianis were true, would he also apply this to these Deobandi fatwas? Certainly not! Thus, his attempt to link Ahl al-Hadith with Qadianis is pure ignorance and baseless.

This is further confirmed by historical events such as:

➤ The participation of Hanafi scholars in the funeral prayers of Ahl al-Hadith scholars like Maulana Muhammad Isma‘il Salafi and Moulana Sanaullah Amritsari.
➤ The apology offered by Sayyid Ataullah Shah Bukhari to Maulana Sanaullah Amritsari for any neglect of his anti-Qadiani efforts.

These examples confirm that Rizwan Aziz’s slanders are nothing but folly and deception, and the truth of the Ahl al-Hadith stands clear and firmly established.
