The Sunnah Number and Virtues of Confirmed Sunnah Prayers in Salah

This article is derived from the book "Salah Mustafa ﷺ" authored by the esteemed Abu Hamza Abdul Khaliq Siddiqi.

✿ Evidences and Virtues of Confirmed Sunnah Rak'ahs

It is Sunnah for every Muslim man and woman, while residing (not traveling), to perform twelve Rak'ahs of Sunnah prayers daily as follows:

➤ Two Rak'ahs before Fajr prayer
➤ Four Rak'ahs before Zuhr prayer
➤ Two Rak'ahs after Zuhr prayer
➤ Two Rak'ahs after Maghrib prayer
➤ Two Rak'ahs after Isha prayer

Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan رضي الله عنها narrated:

She said:
"I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
'Whoever prays twelve Rak'ahs in a day and night, other than the obligatory prayers, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise,' or he said, 'A house will be built for him in Paradise.'"

(Sahih Muslim, Book of Travelers’ Prayer, Hadith no. 729 – Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Chapters of Prayer, Hadith no. 415)

✿ Sunnah Practice During Travel

While traveling, the Noble Prophet ﷺ would omit the Sunnah prayers of Zuhr, Maghrib, and Isha,
but he consistently observed the Sunnah of Fajr and the Witr prayer.

For us, the blessed personality of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the perfect example, as Allah سبحانه وتعالى says:
لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ
(Al-Ahzab: 21)

"Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example."
