The Sunnah Method of Pausing Between Adhan and Iqamah

❖ Interval Between Adhan and Iqamah

✔ Avoiding Iqamah Immediately After Adhan

It is not appropriate to pronounce the Iqamah immediately after the Adhan, as the Prophet ﷺ permitted offering voluntary prayers in between. He said:

“Between the Adhan and the Iqamah, there is a voluntary prayer.”
He ﷺ repeated this three times, then added:
“Whoever wishes (may offer it).”
(Bukhari, Al-Adhan, Chapter: How much time between the Adhan and Iqamah, Hadith 626; Muslim, Salat al-Musafirin, Chapter: There is a prayer between every two calls, Hadith 838)

In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ stated:

“Make such a pause between the Adhan and Iqamah that one drinking water may do so with ease, and one eating food may finish comfortably.”
(Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah by Al-Albani, Hadith 788)

A reasonable pause between Adhan and Iqamah is a Sunnah.
It allows time for voluntary prayer and final preparation for Salah.

❖ The Adhan Before Fajr (During Suhoor Time)

✔ The Wisdom Behind the Pre-Fajr Adhan

The Prophet ﷺ clarified the purpose of the Adhan given during the night before true dawn:

“Let not the Adhan of Bilal stop you from eating Suhoor, for he calls the Adhan at night so that the one offering Tahajjud may return (to rest), and the one sleeping may be awakened.”
(Bukhari, Al-Adhan, Chapter: Adhan before Fajr, Hadith 621; Muslim: 1091)

Pre-Fajr Adhan is valid if it serves a purpose like alerting for Suhoor.
However, the true Adhan for Fajr must be called at the actual time of dawn.

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما said:

“The interval between the two Mu'adhins was such that one would descend after giving Adhan, and the other would ascend to call the next one.”
(Muslim, Al-Siyam, Chapter: Clarification that the fast begins at the break of dawn, Hadith 2901)

The actual Fajr Adhan must be tied to the entrance of Fajr time.

❖ Offering Voluntary Prayers After the Iqamah

✔ Prohibition of Nafl After the Iqamah

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man praying while the Mu’adhin was calling the Iqamah. He ﷺ said:
‘Are there two prayers at the same time?’”
(Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah by Al-Albani, Hadith 8852)

On another occasion, the Prophet ﷺ clearly stated:

“When the Iqamah has been pronounced, there is no (other) prayer except the obligatory one.”
(Muslim, Salat al-Musafirin, Chapter: Dislike of starting a Nafl after the Iqamah begins, Hadith 107)

Voluntary or Sunnah prayers must not be started after Iqamah.
If one is not close to the final sitting (Tashahhud), he should break the prayer and join the congregation immediately.

✔ Exception: One Who Has Already Offered the Congregational Prayer

If someone has already offered the obligatory prayer in congregation, he may perform Sunnah or Nafl even if Iqamah is being pronounced for another congregation.
