The Shar‘i Ruling on a Woman Covering Her Face (Niqab) in Islam

Written by: Qari Usama bin Abd al-Salam

In Islamic Shari‘ah, it is obligatory (wājib) for a woman to cover her face (wear the niqāb), especially when in the presence of non-maḥram (unrelated) men or when there is a risk of temptation (fitnah). This ruling is supported by:

✅ Clear verses from the Qur’an
✅ Authentic Hadiths
✅ The unanimous practice of the Companions
✅ The opinions of the four major Imams and leading scholars of the Ummah

✅ Summary of the Shar‘i Ruling:

✔ It is obligatory for a woman to cover her face in front of non-maḥram men.

🔹 1. Evidence from the Qur’an

(Surah al-Aḥzāb 33:59)
“O Prophet, tell your wives, your daughters, and the believing women to draw their cloaks (jalābīb) over themselves…”

✅ Tafsīr of Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما:

"تُغَطِّي وَجْهَهَا إِذَا خَرَجَتْ"
“She should cover her face when she goes out.”
(Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī 22/33, al-Durr al-Manthūr)

✔ This indicates a clear command for covering the face when in public or around unrelated men.

🔹 2. Evidence from Authentic Hadiths

"لَا تَنْتَقِبُ الْمَرْأَةُ الْمُحْرِمَةُ"
“A woman in the state of iḥrām must not wear the niqāb.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 1838)

📌 Implication:
If women did not normally wear the niqāb, this prohibition during iḥrām would be meaningless.
Hence, this hadith confirms that women customarily wore the niqāb, and were only restricted from it during iḥrām.

🔹 3. Practice of the Companions (Ṣaḥābah) and Their Consensus

✅ ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها said:

"فَخَمَّرْتُ وَجْهِي بِجِلْبَابِي"
“I immediately covered my face with my cloak (jilbāb).”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 4750)

✔ The wives of the Prophet ﷺ and other female Companions were known to cover their faces, as reported consistently throughout the Sīrah and Hadith literature.

🔹 4. Statements from the Four Major Imams

◼️ Imām al-Shāfiʿī رحمه الله:

Covering the face in front of non-maḥram men is obligatory.
(Kitāb al-Umm, Vol. 6)

◼️ Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal رحمه الله:

A woman’s entire body, even her fingernails, is considered ʿawrah (must be covered).
(al-Inṣāf by al-Mardāwī: 1/452)

◼️ Imām Mālik and Imām Abū Ḥanīfah رحمهما الله:

When there is risk of fitnah or a woman is in public, covering the face becomes obligatory.

✅ Scholarly Consensus (Ijmāʿ) & Opinions of Renowned Scholars

🔸 Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله:

“When there is fear of fitnah, or a woman is beautiful, then face covering is obligatory.”
(al-Fatāwā al-Kubrā: 5/523)

🔸 Imām Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله:

“The wives of the Prophet ﷺ and the female companions used to conceal their faces.”
(Iʿlām al-Muwaqqiʿīn: 2/39)

✅ Conclusion:

Covering the face (niqāb) is sharʿi obligation (wājib) for women, especially in the following situations:

① In the presence of non-maḥram men
② When there is fear of temptation (fitnah)
③ In public or social settings

This is the position of the majority of scholars, exegetes (mufassirīn), and hadith experts (muḥaddithīn).
