❀ The Date of the Prophet’s ﷺ Birth

There are differing views among historians regarding the exact date of the Prophet ﷺ's birth, and no single date has achieved absolute consensus. The strongest opinion is that the Prophet ﷺ was born on 9th Rabīʿ al-Awwal, Monday morning. This view has also been supported by the renowned Egyptian astronomer Maḥmūd Pāshā al-Falakī and the famous Indian biographer Shaykh Ṣafī al-Raḥmān Mubārakpūrī.

❀ The Shar‘i Status of Celebrating Mawlid al-Nabī

✿ Examination of the Celebration

Celebrating the Prophet’s birthday, organizing gatherings, expressing joy, or engaging in specific acts of worship on this day under the name of Mawlid al-Nabī is an innovation (bidʿah) and a non-Shar‘i practice. This practice is not established from the actions of the Prophet ﷺ, the Noble Companions, the Tābiʿīn, or any recognized Hadith scholar.
If this act were divinely ordained, then the Prophet ﷺ would have observed it himself and instructed his Ummah accordingly.

❀ Qur’ānic Evidence

Allah ﷻ says:

"إِنَّا نَحنُ نَزَّلنَا الذِّكرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ"

(Sūrah al-Ḥijr: 9)

Translation: Verily, We have revealed the Reminder (Qur’ān), and surely We will preserve it.

When the concept of Mawlid is absent from the original Islamic teachings, inserting it into the religion is unacceptable. The prescribed way of worship and seeking closeness to Allah is only that which the Prophet ﷺ taught. Creating new religious practices constitutes unauthorized additions to the dīn, which is both prohibited and a form of disrespect.

❀ Evidence of the Completion of Religion

Allah ﷻ has declared:

"ٱلۡيَوۡمَ أَكۡمَلۡتُ لَكُمۡ دِينَكُمۡ وَأَتۡمَمۡتُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ نِعۡمَتِي"

(Sūrah al-Mā’idah: 3)

Translation: Today I have completed your religion for you and perfected My favor upon you.

If the celebration of Mawlid al-Nabī were part of the perfected religion, it would have existed during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ. Any practice introduced after him is considered an innovation and a contradiction to the concept of religious completion.

❀ Love and Reverence for the Prophet ﷺ

Loving the Prophet ﷺ is an essential part of faith. Indeed, reviving love and honor for the Prophet ﷺ is part of the religion, but the expression of this love must align with the method taught by the Prophet ﷺ himself.
Introducing Mawlid al-Nabī as a religious practice without divine sanction is a bidʿah.

✔ Prophetic Hadith

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد"

Translation:
Whoever introduces into our religion something that is not from it, it is rejected.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 2697, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1718)

❀ Errors Found in Mawlid Gatherings

Un-Islamic Practices: Such gatherings often include impermissible activities like music and singing, as well as reciting poems with exaggerated and excessive praise.

Exaggeration and Innovations: Many go beyond the bounds of Sharīʿah in praising the Prophet ﷺ to the extent that, Allah forbid, they attempt to elevate him above Allah ﷻ.

Standing in Honor (Qiyām): A common belief is that the Prophet’s ﷺ spirit attends the gathering, and people stand in his honor. However, the Prophet ﷺ disliked people standing for him during his lifetime.
(Refer to: Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī: 2754, 2755)

Intermixing and Other Violations: Gender mixing and other non-Shar‘i practices are also common in such gatherings, leading to corruption in religious gatherings.

❀ Origin of Mawlid Celebrations

The innovation of celebrating Mawlid al-Nabī began after the best three generations of Islam, and has no foundation in the pure principles of Islam. It promotes division within the Ummah and gives rise to religious innovations.

✿ Conclusion

There is no Shar‘i justification for celebrating Mawlid al-Nabī.
This act is an innovation and a baseless addition to the religion.
True love and honor for the Prophet ﷺ must be demonstrated through the methods and teachings clearly outlined in Sharīʿah, not through innovations.
