Fatwa by: Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih al-Uthaymeen (حفظه الله)
Question:
I get tired and sleep before praying Witr. Is it permissible for me to pray Witr before sleeping, since I only wake up at the time of Fajr? Will I receive the reward of Qiyām al-Layl in this way?
Answer:
If your usual habit is that you only wake up at the time of Fajr, then it is preferable for you to pray Witr before sleeping. The Prophet ﷺ advised Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) to pray Witr before going to sleep. By the help of Allah (ﷻ), you may pray as many additional (nafl) prayers as you can before sleeping, and then conclude with Witr and sleep.
If you happen to wake up before Fajr and want to pray more nafl prayers, you can pray them as sets of two rakʿahs, but do not repeat Witr.
And Allah knows best.
