The Ruling on Building Schools on Land Designated for a Cemetery

Authored by: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman Azmi رحمہ اللہ

It is not permissible to use land specifically designated as a graveyard for constructing classrooms or other buildings. Instead, the graveyard should be enclosed with a boundary wall, and no kind of usage that would disrespect the graves should be permitted. This is because, just as the sanctity of a living Muslim is upheld, the sanctity of a deceased Muslim must also be honored. The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم forbade sitting on graves and any form of disrespect towards them.
[Sunan Abi Dawood, Hadith no. 3225]

Therefore, the school should be relocated to a place where there are no graves.
