Question:
What do you say regarding magic?
Answer:
Magic is a reality. The Qur’an, the mutawātir Ahadith, and the consensus of the Ummah affirm this.
❀ ʿAllāmah Qurtubi رحمه الله (671H) states:
ذهب أهل السنة إلى أن السحر ثابت وله حقيقة.
“The belief of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah is that magic exists and has a reality.”
(Tafsir al-Qurtubi, 2/46)
❀ Hafiz Ibn Kathir رحمه الله (774H) reports:
أجمعوا على أن السحر له حقيقة إلا أبا حنيفة، فإنه قال: لا حقيقة له عنده.
“The three Imams are agreed that magic has a reality, except Imam Abu Hanifah رحمه الله, who holds that magic has no reality.”
(Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 1/212)
