The Reality of Kashf and Karamāt: Are Spiritual Miracles Authentic?

❖ Question: What Is the Reality and Authenticity of Kashf (Unveiling) and Karamāt (Miracles)?

📚 Source: Fatāwā Amaanpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amaanpuri

❖ The Answer:

Kashf (spiritual unveiling), mukhāṭabah (divine inspiration), and mukāshafah (inner disclosures) fall under the category of karamāt (miraculous occurrences).
These are real and authentic, and occur as a form of honour from Allah ﷻ upon some of His pious servants (awliyā’).

❖ Evidence from the Sahabah:

One of the most prominent examples of kashf is from:

Sayyidunā ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه

Allah revealed to him a matter while he was far away, and he was able to call out and warn an army commander, who heard him despite being physically distant.

✅ Chain Status: Hasan (Good)

❖ Clarification of the Chain of Narration:

  • Muḥammad bin ʿAjlān clearly states that he heard from his teacher Iyās bin Muʿāwiyah bin Qurrah.
  • Some scholars mistakenly thought that Iyās bin Muʿāwiyah was a direct student of Ibn ʿUmar, thus assuming a disconnection (inqiṭāʿ) in the chain.
  • However, this is incorrect.

📌 Iyās bin Muʿāwiyah was a student of Nāfiʿ (the famous student of Ibn ʿUmar), not of Ibn ʿUmar himself — which means the chain is connected and sound.

❖ Grading by Renowned Scholars:

Imām Ibn Kathīr رحمه الله:

Declared the chain “ḥasan” and “jayyid (good).”
📚 Al-Bidāyah wa al-Nihāyah: 7/131

Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar رحمه الله:

Also graded the chain as “ḥasan.”
📚 Al-Iṣābah fī Tamyīz al-Ṣaḥābah: 3/5

❖ Important Clarification:

Kashf and Karamāt are not under the control or will of the Awliyā’.
They occur solely by the will and permission of Allah ﷻ, and cannot be used as universal proofs for establishing rulings or beliefs.

❖ Deception of the People of Falsehood:

❗ Many people of deviation and falsehood make claims of miraculous visions (mukāshafāt) and supernatural occurrences to mislead others.

✅ Such false claims are known as “istidrāj” — trials and gradual deception, wherein Allah allows miraculous events to occur as a test, not as a sign of piety.

❖ Summary:

AspectRuling
Kashf & Karamāt✅ Real and affirmed by authentic reports
Control over them❌ Not in the hands of the individual
Using as Sharʿī evidence❌ Not allowed
False or fabricated miracles❗ Considered istidrāj and deception

✅ Conclusion:

✔ Kashf and Karamāt are true, proven, and divinely bestowed upon select righteous servants.
❌ But they are not signs of prophethood, not under human control, and cannot replace Qur’an, Sunnah, or Sharʿī evidence.
🚫 False claims of miraculous experiences are often tools of misguidance and trials (istidrāj).
