The Reality Behind the Viral Story Concerning the Background of At-Taḥiyyāt

❖ Question:

What is the reality of the viral story circulating on the internet regarding the background of At-Taḥiyyāt?
Is this incident authentically established from the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ with a sound chain of narration?

❖ Answer by:

Shaykh Ḥāfiẓ Khidr Ḥayāt ḥafiẓahullāh
and Shaykh ʿAbdul Wakeel Nāṣir ḥafiẓahullāh

1. No Authentic Basis for the Viral Incident

✔ The widely circulated story about At-Taḥiyyāt being a conversation between the Prophet ﷺ, Allah ﷻ, and the angels during the event of Miʿrāj has no sound or authentic foundation.

✔ Renowned Islamic sources such as "Islam Question & Answer" and the Saudi Permanent Committee for Fatwa have declared this story baseless and fabricated.

✔ According to their research, no such narration with a valid isnād (chain of transmission) exists in the books of ḥadīth.

✿ 2. Absence in Major Ḥadīth Collections

✘ There is no mention of this incident in any authentic or primary sources such as:
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
Sunan Abī Dāwūd
Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī, etc.

✘ As such, attributing this event to the Prophet ﷺ is not academically sound.

✿ 3. Found in Some Books of Tafsīr and Fiqh (But Without Sanad)

✔ Some commentaries, tafsīrs, and books on fiqh or Sufism do mention similar narrations suggesting that At-Taḥiyyāt was a “gift” presented during the night of Miʿrāj.

✘ However, none of these sources provide an authentic chain of narration, nor are they cited by the scholars of ḥadīth as reliable reports.

4. The Correct Position

✔ Since this incident is not proven with any authentic sanad, attributing it to the Prophet ﷺ is inappropriate and incorrect.

✔ While the words of At-Taḥiyyāt are indeed part of the prayer and hold significant importance, the backstory linking them to the Miʿrāj is not established in ḥadīth literature.

❖ Conclusion:

✘ The story of At-Taḥiyyāt being a divine conversation during the Prophet’s ﷺ Miʿrāj is not proven with authentic evidence.
✔ The words of At-Taḥiyyāt are part of the prescribed prayer, but linking them to this narrative is unfounded.
